Viktor Guide

About me

Hi I'm Wexem, I've been playing the game since season 2. Although I'm not really into ranked (too mentally exhausting) and I usually get to Diamond and quit. My peak was Diamond 2 one win away from D1.

I have a lot of experience at most of the League's champion roster with a few exceptions that I simply dislike to play. I've always enjoyed playing everything in games and trying to get generally good at the game, rather than climbing high ranks. I'm more of a jack of all trades.

Champion Info

Viktor is a unique champion thanks to his passive

Glorious Evolution
, which allows him to agument his abilities after gaining a 100 stacks on it. You gain stacks by last hitting minions/monsters and gaining takedowns on champions. In the guide I'm refering to those abilities as upgraded 'X' ability.

Short TLDR what each of them does:

Augmented

Siphon Power
(Q) - after the ability hits an opponent you get a burst of movement speed.

Augmented

Gravity Field
(W) - your abilities slow enemies for 1 second (doesn't work for
Chaos Storm
(R) ticks of damage)

Augmented

Death Ray
(E) - laser leaves behind a trail that explodes after 1 second and does damage.

Augmented

Chaos Storm
(R) - upgrades automatically after all of basic abilities are augmented. It just makes the storm move faster.

Runes

There're a few options, mostly your preference.

Phase Rush
- there's not much to talk here. If you need
Phase Rush
you run it every time. The safest rune.

You proc it with

Death Ray
(E) +
Siphon Power
(Q) + Auto. The combo is almost unmissable and really quick. Get it against
Olaf
,
Nasus
and other champions that want to run you down. It also gives you slow resistance which is insane against a lot of champions.

First Strike
- a solid rune. Really good synergy with your short bursts. Easy procs against melee oppenents. You always get a lot of money from it, and the damage boost is great.

Summon Aery
- another solid choice. Get it against melee champions at mid to bully them. Better than
First Strike
early, but worse later on.

Your choice between the two of them.

Electrocute
- viable, tho I hate it. There are better choices IMO, but you can try it if you want to.

(You can run

Approach Velocity
instead
Cosmic Insight
when you run the inspiration tree, synergizes with upgraded
Gravity Field
(W)'s passive)

Second page and stat runes are adjustable mostly based on your lane opponent.

  • First Strike
  • Aery
  • Phase Rush
  • Electro

Summoner Spells

Typical mid spells. Adjust to the enemy team.

Exhaust
- against burst assassins and
Syndra
.

Barrier
- defensive pick against longer range mages.

Teleport
- only if you feel confident you don't need anyting else.

Ignite
- offensive pick against weak opponents / need heal reduction.

Cleanse
- most obvious one. Take it if they have difficult to play around hard CC eg.
Lissandra
,
Leona
,
Ashe
etc.

Remember that you can't use it against

Malzahar
's
Nether Grasp
- R or
Warwick
's
Infinite Duress
- R but you can use it against other summoner spells like
Ignite
,
Exhaust
and even Red
Smite

Obviously

Flash
as a second spell.

Skill Path

Standard skill path. You might want to skip leveling

Gravity Field
(W) early on in some matchups that can easily avoid it.
Siphon Power
(Q) max used to be viable (mostly at toplane), but since
Glorious Evolution
(P) rework and removal of the Hex Core as an item, you can no longer get Q upgrade super early to synergize with it.

Item Builds

Starting items

Overall mages have typically 4 options here:

Doran's Ring
+ 2x
Health Potion
- Standard starting items, you have decent early game stats with ring, also provides mana sustain due to it's passive. Kind of scales(stats that it provides matter whole game, even in small amounts)

Corrupting Potion
- Second standard buy, you get it mostly for lanes that you want to fight in, gets significantly worse over time since it's heal and damage doesn't scale at all.

Those two are your basic choices, if you are a begginer - stick to it.

Corrupting Potion
for fighting lanes,
Doran's Ring
for scalling lanes.

Dark Seal
+
Refillable Potion
- A bit worse stats than
Doran's Ring
, but you get the advantage of possiblity to get stacks that give you extra AP and a possible upgrade to
Mejai's Soulstealer
later.

Sapphire Crystal
+
Refillable Potion
- This is a tactic where you farm up 950g to get
Lost Chapter
as soon as possible, and beat your opponent by having a lot more resources. Usually combined with
Teleport
.

You can swap

Refillable Potion
for 3x
Health Potion
if the lane is difficult, and you need extra sustain.

Standard full builds

Burst/Classic

Against tanky opponents

Swich

Void Staff
and
Shadowflame
if they get any early
Magic Resist
. Shadowflame gets really bad if you get it against ppl with resist.

Other options

    Some Matchup Info

Not much to talk about this. I'm just putting a reminder here.

    Chaos Storm
    (R) - "ACTIVE: Viktor conjures a singularity at the target location, dealing magic damage to enemies within the area and disrupting their channeled abilities."

    So for

    Katarina
    ,
    Vel'Koz
    ,
    Anivia
etc. It's worth to keep your ult so you can instantly cancel theirs. You can also cancel
    Nunu & Willump
    's
    Absolute Zero
    (R),
    Shen
    Stand United
    (R) or
    Vi
    's
    Vault Breaker
(Q), the list goes on. Just keep it in mind while fighing champions with channeled abilities.

    Tips and Tricks

    Q's animation cancel

First of all there's an animation cancel for Viktor's Q. Where you can Q -> click on the ground for movement command -> Auto. Which allows you to hit your auto faster then by just auto attacking right after Q. I's a really small time save (something like a quarter of a second if I'm not mistaken). I'm just leaving that in here, so you know it exists and can check it out. I personally don't think it matters too much for someone that wants to pick up a champion.

    How to aim your E

A lot of people struggle to aim it. They change the settings from smart cast, aim it with a basic one and do all kinds of weird stuff with it.

Huge tip to using it smoothly. Pretend like your drawing a line with it, when you press it. Literally imagine yourself in MS Paint, and instead of holding LMB press E and draw the line where do you want it to go. Look how I move my cursor.

    E's range

The range of your E is locked while it's casting. It's a ground target, so it will always go exactly where you pressed it. Which allows us to kind of extend it's range when running back, and surprise an opponent that doesnt expect it to hit from so far away. It's the only ability in the game that can do that.

    E - hitting whole wave

    If aimed correctly,

    Death Ray
can hit all of the minions after they stopped moving and are alligned.

I highly recommend practising this and paying attention to it during the game, since it really speeds up pushing, especially when

    Death Ray
is already upgraded, allowing you to roam faster

    Pre-casting/auto attacking

In League there's a lot of abilities that can be used before using

    Flash
. The way it works is that you can buffer an animation before you
    Flash
, making it cast instantly after. For example:

    Twisted Fate's

    Wild Cards
    (Q) - buffer an animation ->
    Flash

Except that, you can pre click any ground ability and auto attacks as long as they are the last command you input before using a

    Flash
    . For example:

    Viktor's

    Siphon Power
    (Q), Twisted Fate's
    Pick a Card
    (W) empowered auto - pre-clicking the target ->
    Flash

Doing that forces an animation to start as fast as it is possible for the game to register, because you are removing the input delay, that you would have to deal with by pressing the ability/auto yourself after the

    Flash
    .

You've probably had a situation where you flash with an auto, but your opponent instantly flashes away, so your auto gets cancelled. Using what I've described above prevents/limits that as much as possible from happening.

(This part I'll include in all of the guides for characters that use it)

Now for Viktor in that case you can:

    • pre-cast/auto
      Siphon Power
      (Q) both parts
    • pre-cast
      Death Ray
      (E),
      Gravity Field
      (W) and
      Chaos Storm
      (R)
    • Pre-casting E makes a huge difference, since it's really akward to use quickly.

If you like the guide feel free to comment what champion should I cover next.
