Quick Qiyana AD Mid Build
Hey!
Hello, my name is F0cus and I'm a Qiyana main obsessed with playing Qiyana as best as possible.
I have spent countless hours researching, practicing, and analyzing Qiyana so I can create the best guide possible. This guide is made specifically for Qiyana mid but some concepts are applicable to Qiyana JG
Why play Qiyana?
Well, Qiyana is a fairly difficult champion, but her kit comes with great utility and she has a pretty flexible build path.
I love this champion because once you get your R you can apply so much pressure and you can carry the mid-game.
The goal of playing Qiyana mid
Qiyana is an assassin which is a role that got hit super hard by the durability patch. This means she can't carry all games, tanks with cc hard counter her, so in games where you won't make a big impact on the enemy team, you should always play to get your win condition fed. Qiyana got really hard nerfed these last patches, and she cannot 100-0 squishies anymore. Because of that Qiyana is best played as a utility bruiserish assasin who's main goal is to use her r for setups and to use her highly versatile kit to try and cause problems for the enemy with the highest damage potential (in most games that would be the ADC or the MID).
Runes
With the recent durability patch, first strike Qiyana outperforms both in terms of damage and versatility. I go electrocute when there is a good chance of the enemy procking my first strike before me damaging them, thus making it useless.
- Meta Build
- Electrocute
- Goredrinker Bruiser
And remember to always switch your armor/magic resist based on your matchup.
Summoner Spells
As Qiyana you should always go these, 100% of the games you have.
Skill Path
The skill paths are based on preference and the matchup
In the matchup section, you can see which skill path you should take when versing a champ
- normal w start
- q start vs ranged champs
- korean w start for more single target damage
- e cheese
- goredrinker bruiser

Bans
This is one of the hardest if not the hardest matchups for Qiyana. He usually outdamages you from early to late. Even though in the early game, you can still outtrade him if you do well enough.
Try to use bush Q as much as possible to slightly win trades. Get dirk and try to kill. Even if he outdamages you, it doesn't mean he's unkillable. Lvl 1 you can also go for a quick electrocute proc, since he won't be able to do much damage.
The fizz matchup is a tough mind game. Trying to bait his jump is crucial to beating him.
Definitely get
for the sustain!Matchups
- easy matchups
- medium matchups / skill based
- hard matchups/ enemmy favoured
- very hard matcups
The only problem you might have is the inability to get to her without using all your abilities. You should always save your W to dodge her Q or E. Also, you can engage her with river Q, so she can't flash to escape
If you really struggle to kill her get
second. you should always get Q first so Malphite doesn't poke you with his
you can consider using the eclipse build if you want a safer lane or if you verse more than 1 tanky champ.
Malphite is not a big threat pre lvl 6, so just shove him in and look to roam on side lanes, respect his level 6 all-in especially when he buys AP, you
won't be able to kill him in lane because Malphite is an AD-counter with his passive, his high base-armor and his W giving him additional armor stats.
but if he builds AP that means he's going to be more vulnerable to damage, so don't be scared to try and go for a kill, especially pre 6. Look mostly to roam and get your team ahead.
Get a
2nd item if the enemy has more than 2 champs with shileds.Malzahar is relatively easy to kill but also can turn things and kill you. The matchup is pretty average, I recommend going in with Q Bush, which will get his shield out, then just W+Q and
most likely just run away and wait for the next trade. Look for short trades and all in with bush when his shield is gone and has low health. If you're unable to kill him look for roams.
Buy
if you struggle with him
Kassadin is a mage counter, but you are an AD-Assasin. You should look to zone him from cs and engage him instantly if he steps up too close, abuse his weakness and his low base armor. You shouldn't shove the wave automatically, instead, you should freeze the wave on your turret and deny him as much as possible. Make sure to pressure other lanes once you get your level 6 power spike as he will outscale you.
His early game is nothing too special in a 1v1 only issue is his gank setup.
When trading you should look to engage with bush Q so he doesn't stun you.
If he builds Everfrost you should look to sidestep it with w. Wave management is key in this lane. Look to freeze and force all-ins. Shove as fast as you can if he roams or uses R.
Velkoz is not particularly hard, just annoying, he can perma push in the wave but is very easy to kill if you do get on top of him, save W to dodge his knockup when you all in. He will probably be running barrier so chances to kill him are lower. If he plays really passive, search for good roams.
Aurelion will outpush you for the first 3 levels but after that, you can kill him easily, ward in the center of the lane to watch for roams early, at 3+ just kill him.
If he overstays punish him. Aurelian Sol will most likely get tankier later on, so take your advantages of his early being bad and punish his whole team for it.
Any Annie who knows the matchup will most certainly be a headache, not letting you go in. What you can try and do is simply go in with bush at unexpected times and get a really short trade However, she can still one-shot you at lvl 6. If you have any way of getting a lead, whether it's roaming or getting early dirk, it'll help a lot more in one-shotting her more.
Azir, while weak early, heavily outranges you, also his ult is an assassin counter so makes it a lot harder to get onto him, however, he is very weak and easy to kill if you do get on top of him and also has fairly long cooldowns in the early game. pre level 6 you can kill him if he wastes his Q (moves his soldiers) at level 6 you should not fight him.
Ult is pretty good and can interrupt your dashes or your all-ins.
Corki is a late-game monster, but still is a ranged champ and can basically poke you out of lane or even kill you. Don't get poked too much.
Wait for your level 3 and all in him. Try not to use your E till he uses his little dash (W) so you can stay on top of him. Otherwise, try to sidestep a lot and clear the wave fast.
His wave clear is pretty good so be careful. Remember that even if he has W, a short trade (EQWQ) will do a good chunk of damage.
When versing Ekko you usually win trades, obviously if you don't get hit by every single ability, which is hard to do since you should be using bush. Ignite might help for his ult since Ekko has the ability to just escape a fight without any harm. I suggest not wasting ult when he has R up unless you know you're gonna Oneshot. You can try to ult+ignite if his ult isn't very far away.
Galios who run electrocute are usually a lot easier to kill, but even then, Galio overall shouldn't be a problem early game. Get dirk first back if you can, and try
to get an early lead if you can, or it'll be really hard to kill him later on. It's not really a favored matchup for you, but it's also not that bad.
Look to roam, but expect him to follow up with his ult.
Don't use Q's on his turrets unless it's needed (when there is a lot). Since you have many jumps, dodging his stun or missiles shouldn't be a problem.
You only win trades if he doesn't have a lot of turrets down. He's also pretty oneshottable so don't be scared. When trading use bush Q to escape without his turrets damaging you.
You can kill Irelia in early game, mainly dodge her E with W jump / E and simply do trades, don't do really long trades because she will mostly win them. Just be careful,
because after mid-game, she has probably got some items, and since she's a bruiser, it'll be x10 times harder to kill her.
Qiyana should totally win this matchup if played correctly, but it surely is a skill matchup. You can even trade her at lvl 1, as long as you dodge the dagger.
You can use your bush Q+E to engage if she Q's you.
Once you have r unlocked, engage with river Q so she doesn't escape and full combo her.
You can get
if you struggle to survive.
Leblanc is also a skill matchup. Before lvl 3, there's nothing much you can do and it might be worth losing some minions to not get traded. Once you reach lvl 3 or above, you really need to
dodge her chain, you have 2 jumps that you can use to your advantage, you also have bush. Besides that, LeBlanc is a really squishy target that can be killed any time. Look to engage her with river Q so she doesen't escape.
Known as a really tilting/hard matchup if the Lucian plays correctly. In this matchup, you should have good use of bush Q and not get extremely poked out early.
It's OK if you lose a couple of minions in the early game. Do short trades and you should be able to kill him with ult. Remember that Lucian is still a squishy target. They might run exhaust, so
try and get a lead by asking your jungler for help and you should be good to go.
Orianna is a medium matchup only because she is in general a safe and easy laner so a lot of the pressure you have in lane is negated because of that, can shove and roam easily. Good Oriannas might be more of a pain because of their spacing. Using e on the wave and engaging with prowlers is an effective way to catch any Oriana off guard.
You may also go serpents second because of her shield
Ryze is only hard when the enemy knows what he's doing. Matchup goes down to whoever bursts down the other first. Ryze of course has tools like Phase Rush (if he's running it)
or his root. Try to do a small trade where you win, then ult him. Don't get poked out before it.
Reminder that Ryze is also a scaling god, so don't be too cocky later on.
Swain will poke and auto-attack you for free, get your level 3, dodge his E and free kill him. this matchup gets medium if he reaches lvl 6 or gets kills so try to pressure the map.
In teamfights he can match your teamfight potential with his ult and cc and tankyness, so care.
Syndra is just usually a problem because she can just avoid getting traded and do a lot of damage in return. Hold bush, use it, E on her, proc elec asap, and get out. She's still squishy so don't be scared to ult.
Reminder that you don't really need to trade all the time. Just be sure you have the right timings for when you do.
Start Q level 1
Lvl 1 don't be scared to proc electrocute if he gets too cocky (Q+AA+AA) Tho don't also get cocky yourself. Obviously don't trade until lvl 3 and try and not get close lvl 2. Every time he W's, E in. The second part of his W won't hit you so he won't be able to proc his passive for some time. Keep a bush Q for any time he ults and go near a wall then ult if he jumps on you, after a
combo he should be dead if he gets hit by the ult.
This matchup itself is not hard, but rather is really hard to get to him and not get insanely damaged back.
The only thing stopping you from killing him is his cage (and probably he's also running barrier/exhaust). Besides that, he's really squishy. You might wanna get kills in other lanes to make killing him easier.
This matchup could be hard as well it really depends on how good the Viktor is, go aggressive before he gets his first upgrade. Viktor has a bad time if forced to recall early, careful of q/e poke.
Don't be scared to go on him, he'll most likely place his W right at his feet, so it'll be easy to avoid and you will get a trade-off.
You can get
if you struggle.
Try to not get poked out the early game (lvl 1-2), trades are usually safe pre-6, unless he has empowered Q, or uses electrocute. it's recommended searching kills outside mid because decent Vladimirs usually
stay safe. (They also build Zhonyas) Reminder that if the enemy Vladimir is running phase rush, the chances to kill him are even lower considering he's just gonna proc it and run away.
Look to roam.
Save W to dodge poke in lane, this will force him to walk up and auto when he is out of mana and then you jump on him, really average matchup but also can be annoying if they play safe since
They will probably also be running barrier.
If you verse a really passive Xerath, you won't really find a spot to kill him, so look to roam.
Start with Q
This matchup is about whoever thinks ahead of the other one. He's probably gonna abuse his lvl 2 and outpush you. Tradings are safe (with bush) but I recommend getting his passive out before
doing so. Remember Yasuo is still really squishy. Perfect example of a skill matchup.
Always rush
second item because of his passive and shieldbow.
This is a skill matchup and as long as you don't get long ranged comboed a lot you're fine. Trades are fine vs Zed, especially with bush, since he'll probably use W to get away.
If Zed ults you look to time your ult a bit before he comes out of his mark and ult him towards a wall, full combo him and get a free kill.
When engaging, engage with river so he can't escape with w.
Ziggs has great zoning tools with his E and W so try to bait them out then all in, he is pretty easy to kill if you manage to get on him and also is a terrible roamer so swiftness boots early can be good.
Don't be scared to flash on him when you have lethality items. If you get dirk and use ignite you will most likely kill him in an all-in.
As long as you don't get hit by E, you will win the trades, you can either try and risk getting hit by it, by Q'ing with Bush and trying to dodge,
or just waiting for the moment she decides to use it. If she plays safe roam. Reminder that she is also Zoe, so she can sometimes
just run you down with spells and kill you.
Just like Yasuo start with Q
This is also pretty much a skill matchup. Try to confuse him when he E's by using bush Q. Reminder that he is still the same champ when he E's, so don't be scared to just combo him while he's in it. Also pretty squishy, he will also outscale you since he's an hypercarry, but still oneshottable.
Get
second because of W and shieldbow.
This is a really rare matchup.
You should start with Q.
You have to be really careful lvl 1 & 2, since he might all in. Long trades are not good for you, simply because he'll be running Conqueror. You should poke him out and look for an all-in.
Reminder to use bush Q when Viego plays aggressive so he can't stun you.
Start with a Q
This matchup is like Irelia, but worse. Since you won't be able to kill Renekton in early as you can do with Irelia. To be fair you won't be able to stomp this. Maybe go even, and if you're lucky enough, get a kill or two. Try to be useful for your team instead of focusing that much on your lane. Try to poke him with Q's and don't look to trade with him cause he can engage, stun you and just dash out.
Look to roam.
The main issue is her charm, can easily outtrade you if you try to go in. Only go in when she wastes it / You bait it out. After that, she's a free kill, but she'll probably R away so look to river Q her.
start Q early and try to net get hit by Akali Q
Try your best to not give her any chance to outtrade you, you'd usually abuse Bush Q in this matchup. Reminder that extended trades, will most likely result in you losing it. If you start losing, look for roams/help. After 6, whoever lands their abilities first, wins. The only reason why this matchup is hard, is because Akali is Akali.
A quick tip is that when Akali hits her E and dashes towards you, you can cancel it by using river Q on her while she is coming towards you.
She's really squishy & you can use her wall as your advantage, she will outpush you post 6. look to trade her early and you may sneak a kill or two. Be carful of the enemy jg when all-ining Anivia becouse of her passive. Post 6 roam.
get W so you can dodge Cass W if she gets lvl 2 faster.
Cassiopeia will most likely be looking to poke down her enemy. You have to avoid her for the first 2 levels. It's ok if you lose some minions. Trade carefully with bush. She will be killable with ult after some decent trades. W might get you killed, so also work around its CD. Reminder to keep in mind that when you trade her post 6 she may ult you, so try and keep trades shorter and look to exit the trade as fast as possible.
Diana's also a pretty good example of a skill matchup. Any time she has her W down, go for it. If she's holding it, take bush and go in with E+Q, and most likely she'll use it, then run away.
Besides that, it's all about not getting damaged with Q's and getting traded. As long as you dodge at least one Q, the trade is safe.
You can get
if you get bursted down too easily.
Start Q and play safe
Lissandra is one of those matchups where you will probably end up even or losing. If Lissandra plays right, the possibilities of you winning it completely are really low.
Even then, you need to play around CD's, quick trades are your option to burst her down, but she can still follow up with E, so try and poke her out with Q, but don't waste a lot of mana.
Again, don't try and hard win this matchup but rather try to not completely lose it. Look for your jungler's help / Roam.
Reminder that if Lissandra is running Electrocute, even if she
does more damage with it, it also means she's easier to kill too.
Start with your W and look to dodge her harras.
Neeko is an assassin counter in general (lockdown and anti-assassin R) can be quickly bursted if you do get the jump on her, play with your team to create a lead as she's hard to pressure.
In general, it's just really hard to kill her, since you have no way out when you E in, I would suggest throwing some Q's at her and going for a kill. Try to ask your jungler for help to get a lead, that will make the matchup much easier. If she's not ahead and you are, the possibilities to win are higher.
start with Q
Rumble is an assassin soft counter, big shield and easy to build defense items (no need for mana item like other mages), he will shove you in early and is more impactful in early fights. He will be hard to kill him in lane but not impossible. Don't go in if he has his flamethrower.
Building
second is really viable here.
Sylas is a Pretty awful matchup overall. In almost no situation you will see yourself killing Sylas (if he plays correctly). But he deals quite some damage.
Don't do really long trades or else you'll probably end up losing, especially because of his W. Try to deny his W by using bush Q, When all-inning look to ignite him as soon as possible to stop his healing.
Get
second if you struggle.
Play safe in the early game.
Trist has really strong lvl 2 all in start w (she will naturally push wave) grab bush so you can instant stealth Q at 2, lane bully that is also really hard to get on top of (w+r).
Look to roam.
Akshan will usually be running Resolve secondary, and plus his shield, it's very hard to trade him. Usually, just farm, ask for help and once you get dirk you can try and do some small trades. Roam.
Anivia is a pretty hard matchup. look to play safe in the early game. She's really squishy & you can use her wall as your advantage but keep in mind her passive. She will outpush you post 6. Ask for help from Jg and look to play for teamfights.
Pantheon is an assassin counter (E block, W stun), also if you try to roam he can match it with his R, one of the hardest matchups for mid-lane.
Best you can do is wait for help and do some trades. He is Still killable.
You can bait his E with your E bush Q combo and then prowlers so you get behind him and actually deal good damage. Look to fight mainly in bush q and try to minimize the time you are seen while tading. A good combo is E bush Q + + W + bush Q . if you do it correctly you should proc your electrocute and you won't get stunned by his W
Bringing
is a great option.
This matchup is really hard if Vex has any idea of how it works. Basically, you can never trade if she has her fear up. Once it's down, feel free to trade but if you do so with caution and bush Q. Get
, you can also bring into this matchup since you won't be trying to kill vex in lane. Roam if there's an opportunity. Look to all in with r prowlers if you feel confident you can 1 shot her. This is my permaban
In my opinion, this matchup is the hardest matchup there is. This matchup is really hard if Vex has any idea of how it works. Basically, you can never trade if she has her fear up. Once it's down, feel free to trade but if you do so, do with bush q.
Get
Roam if there's an opportunity.
Tips and tricks for every ability
Qiyana's passive ability
Managing, Qiyana's passive ability is crucial to performing well. Her passive allows you to deal extra damage on a target and then marks them. Damaging a marked target doesn't apply the bonus damage. Switching to a different element with your W removes any passive marks on the enemy which allows you to deal the bonus damage again if you hit them with an ability or an attack.
Qiyana's Q ability
Qiyana's Q ability is her most versatile one. Qiyana's Q deals damage in a short-range in front of you, very similar to Yasuo Q but with a slightly longer range.
Many people start Q lvl 1 because of the safe farming it provides.
Getting an element with your W changes your Q to a ranged projectile and gives additional effects based on the element you have. Throwing Q expunges the element Qiyana is currently holding.
Wall Q
The wall Q allows you to deal way bigger damage to targets below 50% health.
It's best used to execute people. The hardest combo in the combos tab utilizes 2 wall Q's to deal insane amounts of damage.
River Q
This is your main gank setup. This ability roots the target hit for 0.5 sec and then slows it for 20% for another 1 sec. The river Q allows you to prevent an enemy from dashing which is amazing to prevent the enemy from dodging your R all-in. Another use is the Q+W+Q combo. Throwing your first Q with river almost guarantees you to land your second Q.
Bush Q
This is Qiyana's best ability. Use it as much as possible.
When thrown the bush Q leaves behind a canopy trail that makes Qiyana invisible when she enters it. The canopy lingers for 3 secs or until you damage an enemy. This skill is what makes Qiyana so annoying to deal with.
You should use this skill when you want to trade safely, when you're getting ganked or when you want to cs safer.
Using your bush Q near the wave allows you to walk up and aa a minion without any repercussions.
When teamfighting chaining bush Q's allows you to stay way longer in the fight without dying.
Qiyana's W ability
Qiyana's W performs a little dash and switches elements. When holding an element Qiyana gains a small attack-speed buff, she gains bonus damage on every ability and attack and she gains a little movement speed buff while near the element she is holding.
This ability's small dash allows Qiyana to dash through some walls.
You should try to always hold an element. Getting caught without an element is a death sentence most of the times.
Many people start lvl 1 W because of the passive reset when switching elements.
if you want to cheese with W lvl 1 you should look to get river/bush W before engaging and then you should switch to rock so that you get more chase potential.
Below is each and every single spot Qiyana can dash through.
Qiyana's E ability
Qiyana's E is a dash that deals a good amount of damage. Qiyana can cast skills or items while in her E animation. Casting E+Q on a champion auto-aims the Q, so there is no need to aim at all. Using W or prowlers while in E animation cancels the E. This is especially useful when you are trying to bait FLASH or a certain defensive ability.
Qiyana's R ability
Qiyana's R is one of her scariest abilities. A single good R can end a teamfight in an instant. Qiyana's R sends a windblast in the target direction that knockbacks all enemies within its path and stops upon hitting terrain.
After a really small delay, the windblast creates an erupting shockwave across any RIVER or BRUSH it passes through, as well as around the borders of the terrain it reaches, dealing physical damage to all enemies struck, with the damage and after stunning them for 0.5 − 1 (based on proximity) seconds and granting sight of the area along its path each for 0.75 seconds.
A good tip I have learned is that you can aa while you are in the ult animation for free damage.
You should look to ult 2+ people in teamfights to get good value of your R
A tip to counter Qiyana's R is that because of the small delay in between the knockback and the stun in her R, if you spam flash you would be able to escape the stun and the damage even if you get knockbacked. To prevent that from happening Qiyana should use river Q before engaging.
Casting R before flashing will leave the enemy with far less time to react.
The Combos
The combos listed below are categorized by how hard they are. This tab is quite big so don't get intimidated, you will learn them all in no time 😃. Remember that you should start most of your combos with bush or river Q
Easy combos
These combos are the basics of Qiyana so try to master them
The basic Q+W+Q
This combo is your basic form of poke. You should always look to have an element ready before your first Q, so that both Q's are ranged.
Тhe lvl 1 W all-in
This combo is your lvl 1 all-in. You should get bush or river element before using this combo. The combo is AA+W(wall)+AA. You should look to get wall element from your W, so you can chase the enemy better because of the w passive movement speed.
the best way to proc electrocute lvl 3
Basically you should use W(bush)+E+AA+Q
This combo is great when you want to trade safely. The bush Q allows you to exit the trade safely or you can stay and surprise them with an all-in.
Medium combos
These combos require a little bit more skill but they aren't anything special.
The basic lvl 3 all-in
you can go EQ+W+AA+Q for max damage, or you can go E+Q+W+Q to exit the combo further away.
The advanced lvl 3 all-in
This combo is usually used when your enemy plays safer and you don't have the range to use your E.
The combo is Q+W+EQ+AA
This way you can use your E because of the little dash your W give
Hard combos
These combos require a significant amount of skill to be performed
training them in practice tool is advised
The prowlers all-in
This combo is your best 100 to 0 combo Qiyana has that doesn't waste your R
The combo is PROWLERS+AA+EQ+W+AA+Q
The hardest combo you can do
This combo requires a very good amount of speed to get pulled off.
The combo is Q+W+Q+FLASH+AA
The combo is best used when you are looking to finish someone below 50 % health.
In most cases, enemies don't expect the combo and they probably won't have the time to flash away before they're dead.
Combos with ult
The basic Qiyana R all-in
This combo is best used when reaching lvl 6
The combo is E+R+AA+Q+W+Q
The R FLASH combo
The combo is R+FLASH+AA+FOLLOW UP
the 1 shot ult from 2 screens away combo
this combo is one of my personal favorites because it allows you to ULT anyone that plays passive, using their minions.
The combo is E on the wave+PROWLERS+R+AA+FOLLOW UP
The most single target damage Qiyana can do
I usually FLASH in when I use this combo so I catch the enemy off guard.
The combo is FLASH+PROWLERS+R+AA+Q+W+EQ This combo is great because it has an escape so you don't die when using it in a teamfight.
Reminder!
Buffering abilities will make your combos noticeably faster
Closing thoughts
First of all, I want to thank the Qiyana mains discord server and the Qiyana mains Reddit, for allowing me to use some of the information there, making this guide would've been close to impossible without their help.
English is my second language so excuse me if there are any errors.
The last thing that I want to tell you is that Qiyana is a really challenging champion, you shouldn't mentally beat yourself up if you can't pull off some of the combos or if you seem to struggle. After all learning Qiyana is half of the fun 😄. Everything will feel so rewarding when you finally pull off that combo you have been practicing for hours, or when you get that beautiful Penta, so take things slow and enjoy your time.
