Introduction
I am a Yorick One Trick that has played him since Season 7, and played League since Season 1. I found Yorick in season 6 and absolutely fell in love with his design, and decided to pull him out in ranked in Season 7. Ever since then, I've been one-tricking him. I originally hit challenger in Season 8, and have been consistently Challenger ever since and have now recently hit Challenger again in Season 12.
why play yorick?

Runes
Conqueror is the best option. Incredibly good on Yorick, due to the Conqueror bug
The Conqueror Bug
Triumph for clutching out fights, Legend: Bloodline gives the sustain that you need, but don't build in your itemization, and Coup de Grace gives the extra damage for finishing off enemies.
Demolish for tower destruction. Bone Plating to win those extended fights.
- best page
- full lethality
- you coward
Summoner Spells
Yorick needs Teleport.
It allows for mid/late game backdoors, and the ability to create immediate pressure while drawing it at the same time.
Flash is vitally important due to Yorick's immobility, however Ignite allows for the early game snowball potential which allows you to transition into your midgame spike.
Ignite also allows you to not build Executioner's and allows you to rush your item spikes instead, due to it having inbuilt Grevious Wounds.
Skill Path
Yorick has 2 skill paths that he should only go

Itemization
Yorick has a diverse item set that he can use.
BE WARY, LETHALITY PLAYSTYLE IS SUPER UNCONVENTIONAL AND HARD TO PLAY
The most classic item on Yorick. Gives Yorick's the strongest midgame power spike compared to any other item and makes the Q bonk deadly. Very solid and gives the strongest splitpushing potential. However, you may find yourself getting kited a bit. Low risk, high reward.
The most fun and strongest, but hard to use mythic on Yorick. Lethality gives insane damage on Yorick but is completely reliant on landing E and makes Q do not as much damage. Makes ghouls monsters, and gives you the ability to gap close between ranged champions, or chase melee champions with a dash... or both. High risk, highest reward.
A balance between Trinity and Prowler, giving the sustain and survivability through the shield while giving decent damage through its lethality. Not as risky as Prowler's but also not as consistent as Triforce. Medium risk, high reward.
The god item. The perfect item on Yorick. Gives Yorick all the tankiness he wants, while giving him damage AND being able to push faster. Do not buy it, if you know for sure that you are going to group though.
Very good item on Yorick because ghouls stack up Cleaver. Gives damage, tankiness, ability haste and armor penetration so that you can completely smash someone with the Q, or for ghouls to do even more damage.
Strong item on Yorick because ghouls apply the slow on enemies. Gives the most amount of damage for Yorick and allows for your ghouls to be incredibly sticky at the expense of some tankiness.
The strongest tank item for Yorick available. Very very powerful item in combination with Hullbreaker. Gives a massive shield that can really surprise the enemies.
A very strong item on Yorick, giving a lot of tankiness and one of the strongest 1v2+ item in the game, giving an insane heal with every takedown. Works really well with heavy ad, with little health items but other than that, an incredibly solid tanky damage item.
Another solid item on Yorick that gives very strong waveclear and a lot of health. Personally I don't like this item that much due to more stronger options such as Black Cleaver being available.
Insanely good late game item due to ghouls being active during stopwatch, and during death animation of Guardian Angel. Very good for backdooring. And staying alive.
Matchups and Synergies
The "/Tier List" module below lets you rank matchups or synergies.
The "/Item Description" module underneath lets you add specific info for each pairing. Click Add New Item to add a champion and the dropdown arrow to add unique tips like starting items, skill order, and power curve.
Aatrox is a very even matchup that ever so slightly favours Yorick. Aatrox 1-5 is stronger than Yorick, and thus Yorick needs to play safe from a distance, farming safely.
However, once Yorick reaches level 6, he is able to do a lot more with maiden, spawning an endless surplus of ghouls and playing war of attrition through health. Once you poke him out of lane, you can then gather plates, and slowly gather a lead through money.
Akali is a very even matchup that typically favours Yorick. 1-5 should be an easy time because Akali runs out of energy very easily (level 1 140 energy cost on Q), and Yorick can abuse those moments where she messes up really hard. What you can do against her is bait at the very tip of the range of her Q, going in and out of the range and trying to fish it out. If you can do it, she loses pretty much all of her damage, and you get a few seconds where you can do whatever you want due to the lack of energy she has. Once she hits level 6 she does have kill pressure, especially good Akalis that are able to Ult, and E mid animation. During the ult animation try to move and dodge the E, and when she ults, predict where she is going to go. From that point, you can use W to trap her after R1, to force her to use R2 in order to get out, or wait further for her to R2, and then use your wall on her afterwards, causing her to have no more dashes. Don't try to go for blind E's in her W unless you get a hard read, remember to abuse the fact that her E is a linear directional movement skill, and causes her to move in a straight line, and use that to your advantage in landing E. This matchup becomes super easy once you get hullbreaker and a bit more health, as she does not have enough damage to kill you. Just don't get poked too hard by her Q's.
His passive allows him to dodge E's very easily and abuse PTA insanely well and if he ever feels threaten he can use his E to get out super easily. Play very safe and avoid taking needless poke 1-5 and try to land E with 4 grave setup. If you can land your wall before he E's, it will result in a good trade. Be wary that he can also double auto your wall to instantly break it, so going 3 points W is a very good idea. The good thing about this matchup is that, Akshan is very squishy, and you can abuse that if you go a lethality build very easily. Akshan also struggles to do a heavy amount of burst to Yorick, and hullbreaker/steelcaps is very effective in reducing his damage to basically none.
Camille is a very even matchup that favours neither side. Camille can go for really aggressive trades, abusing her passive shield, w healing and Q auto attack resets. However, Yorick can easily stack up graves, provided he plays movement and positioning well, and hit very easy E's due to the Camille's nature of wanting to Q to trade or get good W positioning. Yorick can also guarantee a lot of good scenarios, if Camille ever initiates with E. For example, when Camille hookshots into Yorick, Yorick can guarantee W and E, or Q, which puts her at a very big disadvantage. Yorick can also poke with Q due to the extended range of 225 which is above Camille's 175. Level 6 onwards, Yorick has a huge advantage, due to the overwhelming amount of power that Maiden gives being able to constantly spawn ghouls, making it impossible for Camille to win 1v1. Additionally, once Yorick has hullbreaker, he can play war of attrition, making it a very easy matchup.
Be careful with ult, as he can eat it for a 1000 true damage. But also don't let him eat it for free. You can win the fight as 4 ghouls and Yorick naturally does a shit load of damage. Dodge his Q and W as much as possible, and 3 points W is incredibly good into this matchup. Do not let him play slow, as he can sustain off your ghouls, definitely try to kill him in one all-in. You can go ignite in this matchup, but be wary that you will not be able to flash his skills.
Don't get into his E range. Fight him when you have 4 grave setup and when you land E, just box him in W and beat him up. If you're hesitant, wait for level 6 and fight him then. Dodge his outer Q's, and walk INTO him when you have him boxed in. Remember, you can kite him in and out with your cage. You can play war of attrition against Darius (no sustain except for Q, easily dodgable)
Don't get poked by his Q and E early, play for 4 grave setup with E. Ignite is a very good option into this matchup, using it when he's low and ults. Sunderer is also incredibly valuable in this matchup due to Mundo's innate nature of building a lot of health. Grudge > Cleaver is also vital, as Grudge provides a lot more damage.
TP Ignite is incredibly powerful and nigh compulsory into this matchup. Getting Ignite allows you the luxury of not buying executioner's/bramble, letting you get into your powerspikes much earlier.
Be very conscious that Fiora's main goal in lane is to try get favourabe trades and hit your vitals. If it's in a very easy spot to hit, run out of her range and reset it. Levels 1-3, it is very rough as she is just stronger, but it's fine you will scale around level 4-6. After you get 4 grave setup, when she goes in to dash for a trade, do a pointblank E in response and go for a trade. W ALWAYS after she Q's as she cannot get out of it for a few seconds, and those few seconds are enough for you to motion forward to walk behind her so that you're ahead of her. Save your ignite when she's about to hit a vital, or ults you and you will win almost every fight. Hug a wall when she ults you, to block out the 4th vital. As long as you keep in your mind that her main goal is to just hit your vitals, you will be able to abuse it.
Don't get poked by his Q and E early, play for 4 grave setup with E. Ignite is a VIABLE option into this matchup, using it when you predict he is going to W. Auto the barrels when they're low health or try to away from them. One thing you can do, very similar to the Akali matchup when he has a barrel setup on him, is playing hot and cold, going in and out of the barrel range. Gangplanks tend to sit on barrels, and try look to get a barrel chain to poke you, so playing around in and out of the 2nd barrel range will allow you to bait it and then allow you to capitalise, and kill him as he has no barrels to defend himself with.
You beat Garen in early trades with auto Q's and with 4 graves. Many ways to play the matchup. Be wary of ignite level 6 cheese and you will be fine. Itemise armor if he's hurting a lot. I advocate against Sterak's but if he is really hurting, it is a viable option.
Don't get poked by his Q and E early, play for 4 grave setup with E. Go in if he ever E's randomly, and you will have a great time. If he holds E, you can still look forward to initiate, BUT do not use W and save it for AFTER he E's. Be very careful when he goes melee form. Kite side to side, and dodge his skills. Avoid walls so that you don't get R'd. War of attrition is doable in this matchup, but not easy due to the small hitbox of his rat form. Careful with maiden positioning as his W does full percent health damage and eats your maiden up.
Play for 4 grave setup. You can play aggressive early game without being punished. When all-inning him, walk behind your ghouls as you engage, so that he E's your ghouls but not you. W after he E's. Mercs is incredibly good in this matchup.
Be incredibly cautious of her level 1 cheese. Play safe and play for 4 grave setup, and poke with it. Dodge and be cautious of her Q > E combo too. After she gets low enough you can threaten to kill her with ignite. Yorick can also win the all-in <6 if you are able to sidestep her Q, and ignite early to stack up your conqueror. Save W for when she E's. Level 6, play for attrition, and if you ever see her waste E or Q for your maiden, you can engage on her. Sidestep the R's and dodge as many skills as possible. If she lands most/all of them you will lose.
Play safe and avoid Heim poke. Play for level 6 and go for an engage. Try sidestep his W and E, (VITAL) as you initiate. You can build tankiness in early game to survive him. Maw and mercs are good, but if you can try go hullbreaker first as it will give enough tankiness. Prowler claw is a very viable option if you struggle getting to heim.
Play for 4 grave setup. Try to dodge tentacles, and DODGE HER E (VERY IMPORTANT.) Be careful because she can auto-W to break your wall, or W out of the wall entirely, but many Illaoi's don't know this so you can usually just 4 grave setup and just engage onto her. When she hits her E, you must back off and leave its range otherwise you'll take a lot of heavy damage. If you dodge the tentacles as well, she loses her healing in the kit and you can play war of attrition. Avoid Q trading, as it will net her usually a win in the trade, and sets her position up for a point blank E.
Irelia is one of Yorick's theoretical worst matchups, due to the fact that she can Q all your ghouls, W your all-in and Q, and stun your maiden etc. But, it's not so bad due to the existence of Ignite.
You must run ignite, in order to cut down on her Q healing, and play for level 6. Go hullbreaker first item, steelcaps and normal itemisation. You will be far too tanky for her to beat, and you can easily brute her down through Q and maiden damage. Try sidestep to dodge her E, as it will make the fight a lot harder. Ignite, AS she is Q'ing around. Use W when there is only one unit in order to get value out of it. No point in maxing W due to her mobility though. Do not summon ghouls out of nowhere. Summon it only to push a wave.
Jax is one of Yorick's counter, being able to E his damage and Q out of dangerous situations or engage onto Yorick. Still, Yorick has many ways to outplay him. If Jax ever Q's onto Yorick, Yorick is able to guarantee W and E onto him, putting him into a bad position. From that position, it is vital to kite in and out so that you don't take damage from Jax, while DPSing him. Try poke with Q and grasp in lane and look for an early lead. If you can get an early lead and snowball it, try to win in midgame, as Jax heavily outscales you. Anaethemas Chains is good against him, and so are Plated Steelcaps. But if you're a gigachad and ahead enough, you can go full damage to kill him before he kills you. Just remember to kite well with W.
Jayce is a hard matchup if the Jayce is good, but it is very hard to pilot him well so it's usually pretty easy. Jayce is a very easy gank target for junglers, because he's squishy and fairly immobile. Try to avoid getting poked early and play for 4 grave setup and then engage onwards. Jayce cannot evade it effectively, albeit being able to break the wall and Q jump out of the cage, usually the ghouls will do a hefty amount of damage, making it a bad trade. Try kite and sidestep around in general in this matchup, to try dodge his shock blasts. Be careful around minions, as he can Q onto them in hammer form to poke you.
Kayle scales and becomes an absolute monster, but before then she is an immobile champion that is suspectible to the 4 grave setup. Go for a normal E and W combo, but if she W's herself for movement speed, you can wait until the movement speed buff ends and engage after that. Be wary early game for her damage with auto-E and PTA proc, as it does a surprisingly amount of damage.
Kennen is a rat meaning he has a smaller hitbox than most other top laners, and it can be very hard to land E, and even if you do land E, it is very easy for him to run away with E. Try bait out his E, and engage after that and it will be very easy to kill him. Hide behind ghouls/minions/maiden to dodge his Q, and be wary of his stacking W that he can auto you for a guaranteed passive proc.
Kled is a bad matchup purely because of the bug when he E's he kills all your ghouls in one shot. Not only that, he is able to dive effectively with the jungler due to his passive and overall has many ways to override Yorick's skills. However, Kled has one of the biggest weaknesses that any champion can abuse, and that's his stupidly massive health pool with his passive horse and combined health on the mount. This leads to Sunderer being incredibly broken against him, healing you for a lot of health and also your E and Maiden doing a lot more damage than it is supposed to.
Malphite is an annoying champion that can poke you early game, but struggle to actually ever win the 1v1. Yorick does mixed damage, a lot of magic with E and R which completely ruins Malphite, and you have poke with E so that you can win war of attrition. If you really struggle in the matchup, go Sunderer and Mercury Treads. When all-inning in the early game with the 4-grave setup, try to kite in and out to dodge his E, which massively reduces your attack speed and DPS.
Mordekaiser is a very devastating champion in the early game, being able to bully Yorick very hard. His level 6 not only locks Yorick out of the ability to use ghouls and R effectively, but also puts him in a massive disadvantage. Pre-6, play for 4 grave-setup and try to dodge his skills and you will win the all-in. Level 6 onwards, try to save W for death realm, and kite around, W'ing yourself so that he can't get to you and auto you down. Try sidestep the Q's, and E's.
Ornn is one of the strongest tanks, offering a lot of damage and utility with all of his skills while still doing insane damage with the stupid brittle effect. Try to avoid his W at all times, this may sometimes need u to walk forward behind him to dodge it. Whenever he Q's, walk away from it so that he cannot E it to knock you up. Whenever you have the brittle effect, stay away from him so that he cannot proc it and outtrade you. Play for 4 grave setup and when you engage DO NOT W. Wait for his E before you W, as it can break the wall. After he E's, W and he will be free food.
Pantheon is a fairly oppressive early game champion especially in tandem with a jungler due to his W. Avoid close range fights with him early game as he's much stronger. When you have a 4 grave setup engage with E like usual, and try kiting AROUND him as a circle so that he struggles in landing his Q, and cannot land E properly. As long as you survive the early game, he will be a very easy champion to beat due to his immobility and Yorick's much higher damage.
Poppy has a very strong early game being able to poke with her passive + grasp and Q pokes. However as long as you don't stick near a wall, she will never really have kill pressure, while Yorick has huge kill pressure with the 4 grave setup. Stand with her inside your W, as she can E any unit outside the cage to leave your cage. Her W can cancel your ghouls jumps, however she cannot cancel the Sunderer and the insane magic damage percent health you have with E and R.
Quinn has a really oppressive early game, being able to poke from afar and spam Q, and E'ing you if you ever get too close. However, she still loses to the 4 grave setup super hard as long as you land E. If you ever get a hard read on her E, you can predict W, right before she W's so that she jumps right back into the cage. If she ever roams to help other lanes PUSH PUSH AND GET THOSE PLATES. Stand behind your ghouls when engaging, so her Q doesn't blind you.
Renekton is one of the strongest early game champs, having insane sustain and damage with 2 dashes. However, after he uses his entire combo he is very vulnerable with long cooldowns, so try to bait him into using his combo, and then go for an extended trade and look for a solokill. Don't engage with 4 grave setup, let him engage. Never fight him on full fury, and respect him if he has 50 fury as he will heal a lot and do a shitton of damage. If you go for cs and he ever tries to trade with you, always respond with a Q.
Riven is the top star of top lane of pain and agony. This matchup is highly volatile, depending on the Riven's skill level. If possible try to sneak Q's onto her, and if she tries to extend an all-in on you, fight back with E and W. Kite in and out of W in long fights to beat her. When engaging on her wait until she uses her E and Q3 until you use your W.
Sett is one of the hardest matchups in the early game due to his ability to kill ghouls and W with his passive. He can also stun Yorick using ghouls, and has a really hard to dodge W. However, you can poke with ghouls, and look for opportunities when he's low HP and low grit. OR you can fight him when he misses a vital skill, e.g. E or W. Be careful though, as he is very strong upfront and you will rarely win through brute force. Death's Dance is incredible against him.
Shen is a hard matchup if the enemy is really good with spacing and using Q effectively. In this matchup, you want to dodge getting poked by Q pointlessly, and play for 4 grave setup and poking him with E if he tries playing upfront with you (something he must do because he has no ranged skill.) When he ults, abuse it and try get plates/towers. Steal krugs/gromps as well and take as many camps as possible. Sunderer/Grudge is very important in this matchup. You can play war of attrition as well.
Singed has no mobility and doesn't do enough damage and isn't tanky enough to do anything to Yorick. He has literally no way to deal with the wall, and Yorick can easily just abuse him in the wall along with the ghouls. The only thing worrying in this matchup is his insane gank setup being able to W and E with a jungler but other than that it's a very easy matchup.
Sion is a very tanky champion, but not an issue at all because there are many ways to deal with him. You can use the side of your W to cancel his Q, use it to cancel his R and you have percent health on damage with E and R so you can shred him easily. So play for 4 grave setup, and just go for a usual solokill/trade. Be wary, later on in the game, Sion becomes insanely tanky due to his W and his synergies with other tank items such as stoneplate and steraks.
Sylas is a yorick-favoured skill matchup. He has a lot of room to outplay especially with his E and W dashes, and can be a threat in the early game. But if you can setup for 4-grave setup then he shouldn't be an issue at all, as his passive is bugged and he cannot auto ghouls to kill them. You can also play to poke with E and do whatever you want really. Wait until he E's before you W. His ult to steal yours is useless. If he heals too much go executioner's and you'll be fine.
Tahm Kench is a tanky champion that has a borderline oppressive early game. Very strong defensive with his E, and very strong Q which pretty much gives everything (poke, damage, sustain, cc.) However Yorick has a few ways to prevent Tahm Kench from doing what he's capable of. Yorick can use ghouls and stand behind them to block the Q, use W to cancel Tahm Kench's W (very important) and can also go hullbreaker first item, which often timse botches a lot of Tahm Kench's damage. Not only that, Yorick tends to love going Sunderer, which is super effective against Tahm Kench. Be very wary of the amount of CC he can offer with his R. And remember to dodge W. Go MR in runes.
Teemo has a lot of poke in the early game. However, he has no way of dealing with your ghouls or Maiden. Just play for 4 grave setup and avoid early poke and go for an all-in. Can also choose to poke with ghouls, whatever you want to.
Tryndamere is one of Yorick's worst matchups and for good reason too. Can E out of your cage easily, able to run down Yorick without much counterplay and easily outtrades him, and scaling harder than him. However there are a lot of things you can do to make your life easier. The most important trick without a doubt in this matchup is to not get ran down, so one of the things you can do is weaving in and out of your cage. This will stall for time, and waste his ult, while you kite with your ghouls and maiden. Another thing is trying to threaten him early. Levels 3-5 is your chance to kill him. He often times won't be strong enough to fight you with ghouls up. Just be careful to weave and kite in and out to not die to him.
Urgot is a very unique matchup. Whoever hits their skill first wins in this matchup. If you are able to get the box around him first before he E's you, it becomes easy as he becomes unable to E you, and is helpless to you being able to beat him down. But if he ever E's you, it's guaranteed death as he lands his entire combo on you. Try to play in and out of the tip of the range of Urgot's E. Be very wary as his W one shots all the ghouls and can hit very hard with the shotgun legs. Stay on one side of Urgot so that you do not take all of his legs. Try sidestepping to dodge his R and if possible, try to get hit by his Q when he's inside your wall, so that the machine gun focuses on you, but not the ghouls or the wall.
Vladimir has no way of getting out of your cage, and is a very squishy champion especially if you build grevious wounds. One of the easiest matchups, but listed as 2 because he can poke you in lane and punish you heavily if you do not space correctly and gets you in positions where you're too low to initiate, and can outscale you. Go executioner's play for 4 grave-setup and kill him.
Wukong has a lot of damage early game due to his attack speed steroid with E and really good poke with Q. Try to respect him early game to not get poked. You can win all-ins with 4 grave setup and catching him in your W (if he doesn't W out of it) Level 6 onwards, try to box yourself in so that he can't properly hit the ult. It's risky to box him due to the fact that his W gives him a dash, but if you're confident or you get a hard-read you can do it.
Yone has 4 dashes. Q3, E1, E2 and R. With that in mind let's get into the matchup. In this matchup, you can only go for favourable trades when you have grave setup, or maiden active. Level 1-3, you want to play safe and slowly setup graves. After you have 4 grave setup, when he goes for a trade, whether it be a Q3 into you, or E1, you can respond back with a pointblank E and go for a very extended trade. Dodge Q's as often as you can, by moving sporadically side to side. This is incredibly important in dodging Q3's as he can do a guaranteed R after. W at his base spawn point when he Q3's into you, or at the base of his E1, as he will be forced to use a dash to get out of it. This matchup is very iffy, as it is up to the Yone's skill to win. As long as you play movement better than him you'll be fine. Be careful for each item spikes as they are incredibly powerful. Go Serpent's Fang third item.
Game Plan
Early Game
Early game with Yorick is completely dependent on the matchup and the runes you go. However, no matter what, you will always look to respond against trades with Q's, and to engage with the classic E-W with ghouls into the massive Q. Regardless, most matchups will require you to play safe levels 1-3, and from then on we can look for opportunities to fight. Yorick with ghouls is basically 2 Yoricks because the ghouls just contribute that much damage. If you do not have ghouls do not ever fight, as your only decent damage source will be your Q on a 7 second cooldown. Once level 6 hits, however, that's when the the enemy must submit to your power, as you hold constant pressure with your ult active, being able to summon ghouls over and over again. With that pressure, gain a cs lead, and slowly rack up that money to get a hullbreaker. If the enemy ever leaves the lane, destroy the tower. Get those plates. Get that money and keep it to yourself.
Mid Game - Late Game
After you find yourself with a lead over the enemy top laner, you can look to split-push now. Grab heralds if you can, and look for opportunities to attack their tower, when the enemy is having a skirmish or fight elsewhere. Attack when they are attacking, so that the enemy is forced to make a decision. Deal with you and lose objectives on other sides of the map, or keep team fighting, and hope that the aftermath of the Yorick splitpush doesn't leave too many marks.
During this time where you splitpush, you need to be aware of when you should or shouldn't pressure. For example, if there are no objectives up and no lanes being pushed, there is no point in hard splitpushing, as the enemy will be able to pick you off and then easily make a play afterwards. Splitpush is powerful as it forces decision making to be made from the enemy under pressure, something that can be hard to judge from even the best players in the world.
Late game follows the same ideas. However, everything is at a much higher stake. But if you played the mid game well, you have the opportunity to backdoor, which is incredibly powerful.
