Intro

Note: This is shortened version of my Sion guide on Mobafire with the same name. If you would like a bit more info and additional build options, I suggest you check it out.

About Me

I have been a Sion main since his rework, he has been my most played and favorite champion since season 5. In Season 6 I reached diamond with a 68% winrate on Sion over 169 games.

Why Sion?

Sion is, in my opinion, the most versatile tank is League of Legends. He is able to adapt to each game in a way that is unmatched by any other tank. Many even play Sion as an AD assassin or bruiser including Thebausfss and Tilterella, both Challenger AD Sion mains and streamers.

He is always going to be a great tank who can fill the role that is needed for his team. He also has a very low pick and ban rate, making him a great champion to main or even one-trick. Sion is very easy to learn but he also has a lot of potential for skill expression, solidifiying him as both a great champion for new players and for masters alike.

How to use the guide

I suggest you use this guide as a foundation to find your own way to play that works for you. Don't strictly follow a full build; learn each of the item options and try to adapt each game. The full builds I showcase are just examples and will not be ideal in every situation or game. Tanks, more so than other roles must build items based on the factors unique to each game.

Runes

Main Setup

Most matchups you'll want to go with the Grasp setup. You can change a few things around like trading Demolish for Shieldbash, Conditioning for Bone Plating/Second Wind, or even Overgrowth for something like Revitalize or Unflinching. Biscuit Delivery can be traded for Magical Footwear and Approach Velocity could be traded for either of the other options in the bottom row. It all depends on your preference and also the matchup that you are up against.

Utility Setup

This setup can be taken in pretty much any scenario if your goal is to have more CC. The runes can be swapped in the same way as the "Main Setup" runes. For example, you can trade Bone Plating for Second Wind or Conditioning.

Spellbook Setup

You should consider taking this page against ranged matchups. This is a more utility focused setup than the Grasp page. Spellbook is a great rune, though it is very difficult to use correctly so you may want to practice with it before taking the page into ranked.

Summoner Spells

Teleport + Flash

I suggest taking Teleport and Flash most games as they are very well-rounded summoner spells that work well with Sion. Teleport enables a lot of plays across the map and is also great if you are behind because you can teleport back to lane after dying or recalling. A good play that you can make it to Ult gank bot when you get level 6, hopefully killing 1 or 2 then Teleport back top lane after.

Ignite + Flash

I don't recommend taking Ignite as Sion. He just doesn't get much out of it. I would only consider taking ignite if you are going with an AD Sion build and you want to cheese the opponent.

Ghost

Some people have been starting to take ghost instead of flash on Sion and they have been doing well with it. It has a solid winrate, try it out in a couple normal games and see what you think.

Skill Path

Max Q first then W, then E. Put a point in your Ult whenever you get the chance. You can start Q at level 1 instead of W but starting W is really good for trades and it allows you to start stacking your W passive (bonus health) from level 1.

Item Builds

This tank setup is great for just about any situation. You may want to change a couple things around if the enemy team has a lot of magic damage or if you are against an AP laner. Only buy Bramble Vest early against auto attackers with lifesteal or healing like

Fiora
. Buy
Iceborn Gauntlet
instead of
Sunfire Aegis
if you are behind in lane or against a ranged or mobile opponent that you need to be able to stick to.
