Hi. Im Kryz also known as WeaksidesRefugee ive recently competed in the British Esports Tournament as a mid laner for Halesowen College
Whilst i mainly play other mages and not Karthus I noticed the lack of Karthus mid guides which is a pick I find very enjoyable
Karthus mid functions very similarly to Karthus APC and can be played just as agressively or even more so than the botlane counterpart
On to the runes and reasoning for them
My go to rune for karthus is dark harvest and heres why: it provides extra scaling to karthus as overtime u will start hitting more and more devastating Rs its not very uncommon to see the enemy ADC get killed from half hp late game with this rune it also provides additional lane pressure as landing a Q on a target that has a drak harvest proc on them can lead to an easy kill
I see a lot of people using first strike on karthus I personally disagree with this as this would require you to waste your potentially game changing R for a 100 gold pay out which can seem tempting however this is the Haram way brothers for if one holds his R for an assist or a kill the reward is equal or greater it also puts a cap on your scaling unlike dark harvest that scales infinitely
into unfavourable matchups where dealing damage isnt really an option in lane or seems redundant i recommend taking manaflow band and gathering storm as the secondary tree as this will help with the mana problems and also help your scaling massively.
Finally the most important thing about karthus mid YOU ARE A SCALING CHAMPION NOT A SNOWBALLING ONE this is important to get through your head yes if you get giga fed your R will do a majority of someones hp bar however you will never fully one shot someone if this were to ever happen in your game someone is getting banned the protip is to feed your team not yourself your job as karthus mid is to get into the enemy team with E on spam Q zhonya Die W spam q and then R this is enough to turn 80% of team fights if your team has a brain hence you want to make sure your team knows what to do and have the items/gold/levels to do it.

Item Builds
Void staff second item can also be built into tank heavy comps and if you are competent enough to hit Qs consistently then rylais can be avoided although it still provides a huge amount of utillity

any jungler with CC is huge for karthus amumu sejuani fiddle anything like this is insane for you
the general matchup tip is to focus CS not kills u will outscale 97% of the roster just chill no need to risk it there are far better champions that will snowball out of control if you feed
