My heart is broken, so I would play on the Ruined King, right? (Actual for Patch 13.8)

Champion high detailed guide

Intro

Greetings, summoners! I am IronManchik and I really love to make different guides and content to help people play this game a little bit better. I had experience with other platforms earlier, but they were closed and I was a bit sad after that, but I hope that this new site would have some success. So, today I want to introduce guide on Viego - the champion with that I really fall in love after his release. I would show a bit strange build path, but don't worry, it really works (in some situations of course).

I am playing League since the end of season 3 (I played 36 games - 8|28 wr and get my Bronze 5). In season 4 I get my diamond 5 on Russian server playing top and adc the most (Darius, Lucian, Vayne, Graves, Ezreal and Fiora the most played champions) and after that diamond 3 on the EU West in season 5 (mostly in jungle - Lee Sin, Xin Zhao and etc.). Max elo - Master tier EUW/Challenger RU. Roles - autofill, but support is less played role. Usually I can't play one champion, but Viego is like all champion in one, so I can play some games in a row on him. I am Master tier player multiple seasons (in season 12 I hit 220 lp at adc role and on the second acc I had 159 lp on support role, plus also hit master in jungle, in season 11 I was autofill master and in season 10 - midlane, prev seasons played on toplane mostly for competitive).

Runes (Main)

Viego is AA based champion, so Conqueror is the best choice, because you stack it immediately. Also you can choose Press the Attack against full squish team or when you playing more support style build (when you have so much damage in your team).

Runes (Secondary)

As small runes you really want to take Triumph, like every champion with resets (like Yi, Darius, Katarina and etc.), it just helps you be alive in fights. Legend: Alacrity is the best choice also, but sometimes you can see that you are the only frontlaner and enemy team have a lot of CC, so you should take Legend: Tenacity against heavy CC teams. Coup de grace is helpful against teams that prefer fast fights (no heal, low hp rates), Last stand is really must have rune when you will build bruiser build or just playing against bruisers, tanks and heavy heal teams.

Magical footwear and Cosmic Insight are classic combo that gives you some value (resources) to play with, but sometimes you should prefer Unflinching (you can change Tenacity to Alacrity, if you would have too much tenacity in main tree, but also you can choose both runes and take Tabi) and Bone Plating against hard burst teams. When you are only frontlaner in your team, you can take Condtioning and Overgrowth . Also I really recommend to take Conditioning against heavy AP teams (3+), so you can abuse them easily (Wit's End/Hexdrinker and Mercury's Treads).

Summoner Spells (Loadout)

There is nothing special - always take Flash. Teleport you should take for lane Viego, you have no other choice since they removed sustain.

  • Jungle Summs
  • Top or Mid

Skill Path

Just to be clear, there is nothing special. You just don't have a choice to max it other way. Take this R>Q>E>W path every time. If you play on lane - take W second, in jungle always E (except cheese gank or random moves on the map by your botlane or enemy team).

Item Builds

The most interesting part of this guide - builds. I would tell about bruiser and assasin builds + some optional variants (off-meta) here.

Classic Assasin's build

Viego is AA based champion with crit scales, so he can be played like normal assasin with crit build (like Master Yi or Xin Zhao at some point). Standard build path can remind Xin Zhao build, because you start with Immortal Shieldbow or Eclipse and then you should take Essence Reaver. Starting item (choice of smite) always depends on enemy teamcomp - if enemy team have 3-5 ranged champions you should defiantly take blue smite to have better access to them, if not - red smite is always must have, it just give you more duel power. Also I really recommend you to take control ward instead health's potions (or just save 150 gold), because your clear are really free and you would be always full hp (but if you face strong early game jungler, you can response and still go for default start). Take Oracle Lens after warding a brush on the river (back at 0.45 at the river in opposite side of you starting buff to place a ward).

After completing two core items in this build you can take some options. If you get hard snowball, you can take Infinity Edge and oneshot enemy's carries. But it wouldn't happen every time, so you should be ready to take something like Guardian Angel, Wit's End, Death's Dance, Randuin's Omen, Deadman's Plate, Force of Nature or even Black Cleaver (it is really good item for Viego, I would say about it in bruiser build more, but it would help you in assasin's build also). Also don't forget about Executioner's Calling against heavy heal.

Boots: usually you will take Mercury's Treads or Plated Steelcaps (Ninja's Tabi...), but sometimes it's fine to take Berserker's Greaves (it is high risk - high reward choice, I am not recommend to take it).

Bruiser Build

As you could see, there is a high potential for bruiser build for Viego, because of his long fights nature, so you can be a frontlaner for your team easily with this type of build.

First of all, you must look at enemy teamcomp and ask yourself some questions:

1. How much CC and AA based champions enemy team has?

If enemy team no CC and have at least 2 champions that relies heavily on their autoattacks, so you should defiantly go for Plated Steelcaps without any Tenacity in runes and build.

If enemy team has a little CC that you can't ignore and no autoattackers at all (tanky toplaner, mage in jungle, assasin mid and caster adc for example), so you should go for Mercury's Treads and still no Tenacity in runes.

But if your enemies has mixed teamcomp, just take Plated Steelcaps and Tenacity in runes (depends on how much CC they have - you can take only Legend: Tenacity or take it with Unflinching also).

2. What type of damage enemy prefers?

If there is a lot of magic damage, so you should just rush Hexdrinker first without any doubt (mage in jungle + mid is insane easy for Viego with Hexdrinker to deal with).

If enemy team has more AD threats you can usually take DeadMan's Plate and Plated Steelcaps after finishing your Kraken's Slayer or take Bramble Vest or even full Thornmail second after Shieldbow (depend on a build in every situation, but Kraken's Slayer is superior choice atm (Patch 12.13). You will be a hard to kill and deal good damage still.

If enemies have mixed damage, so you can choose between actually four variants for fronlaning: 1) Kraken's Slayer + DeadMan's Plate + Force of Nature; 2) Immortal Shieldbow + Randuin's Omen + Wit's End/Force of Nature; 3) Blade of the Ruined King + IceBorn Gaunglet + Death's Dance + Hexdrinker (for example); 4) Trinity Force + Death's Dance + Hexdrinker.

Also, you can consider Black Cleaver as your first or second pushare in 13.8, because this item is so good atm. Build Cleaver into Kraken's Slayer or Immortal Shieldow for good results.

If enemies have no burst damage, you can go for Blade of the Ruined King + Kraken's Slayer/Immortal Shieldbow for draintank style of build.

3. When I can take other mythic's options?

It really depends on situation and you knowledge, but if you are the only frontlaner, but not a damage dealer, you can switch your DPS mythic for Goredrinker/Jak'Sho against melee teamcomp (3-4 melee champions) or IceBorn Gaunglet against range teamcomp (3 range carry), just because they are really squishy and you will still deal insane damage to them without any items.

Eclipse is extreamly good option to close games early or just to have good start, because Serrated Dirk is the most powerful early game choice for sure. You can see it on example of Kha'Zix or Graves when they just destroy early game with it and Viego isn't an exception. After Eclipse you can usually take Black Cleaver, Death's Dance and Hexdrinker/Wit's End (or other tank options that depends on enemy team type of damage).

Stridebreaker is fine option against heavy range teams, cause iit gives some kind of locking target potential.

After that you should think about Legendary options. There are so many of them and I think it's more about you knowledge of itemization at all. But still I can recommend you to take Guardian Angel or Death's Dance against AD if you don't know what to build. It is general good items, but just think about your health's pool - you can have 200 armor but with 1800-2000 hp you would be easy to kill. Optimal to have something like 130-150 armor and 3000 hp. Against magic damage you should have early 100-120 magic resist (Hexdrinker/Wit's End, Mercury's Treads and maybe Conditioning) and usually build Force of Nature in late game, because other options sucks so hard against Void Staff (unfortunately). Don't forget to build QSS against Malzahar's, Urgot's, Warwick's utimates. Gargoyle Stoneplate is also general good item against mixed damage, don't forget about it. The last one thing that I can note - Titanic Hydra is really good general item in build with Immortal Shieldbow or IceBorn Gaunglet/Jak'Sho, because it would give you damage + health's pool.
