Hi, I am Lackii, been playing league of legends since season 2, but started wanting to climb in season 8, last season i peaked diamond 1 65 lp spamming tahm kench with a 70% wr. This guide will be a top lane guide to tahm kench and why this playstyle simply is the best. Peaked rank 30 on tahm kench last season according to league of graphs, have a screenshot somewhere but just trust me lads. This build will make your enemies type: "that champion", "broken champ" or "wtf is this shit" 10/10 games.
Steadily climbing this season with Tahm again, took a bit to figure out the playstyle but we are back and we are climbing! If i were to hit diamond I might start streaming abit!
Why Tahm Kench?
Playstyle
Tahm kench is one of the most opressive top lane duelists in the game, his damage is really great and the utility your kit brings to late game when you don't have the damage you can use your kit as a pick and escape tool for your teammates.
Pros
Great laning phase
Great roams
High CC
Snowballs well
Frog
Cons
Can be kited if not careful
Falls off
If falling behind can feel kinda useless
Runes
Most people think that shield bash is good on Tahm, I strongly dissagre, the small damage it brings is nothing compared to the value of demolish. Second wind is optimal because you mostly do short grasp proc trades or Q trades until you just run them down with ghost. Buscuit delivery and approaching velocity is hands down the best secondary options, the sustain that buscuit delivery brings and the catch up from approach velocity is deadly.
Rune Page
Summoner Spells
Ghost and Tp is my prefered runes all day, tahm kench has no flash mechanics really, so the ability to stay on your enemies for the ult or q stun is alot more valuable than flash. Tp is just great for roaming and rotations mid/late game. Ignite and flash are both great but not as good, can be better in some matchups.
Summs (Role 1)
Skill Path
Can take q level 4 if you feel like you are winning and can cheese a kill with it, one thing to note is I have found that tahm kench really power spikes level 5, his q deals insane damage. I have found that there are two best skill paths, most lanes I go e level 5, because before leveling your e twice its kinda useless. The other option is to go for a more damage and killing skill path, you get your second point in E at level 8. Note that if you take the most common skill path you kind of delay your powerspike to 6-7 but your dueling potential gets better then!
Your E isnt even an ability until you actually get 2 points in it. Its absolutely useless until then and tahm relies quite heavily on his e since he is balanced around that being a part of his tankiness. But dont max it second! Your W is so good when maxed, the range increase is incredible.

Item Builds
Frostfire is easily the most consistent one, but if against heavy melee comps you can go sunfire.
So, to begin with, merc treds are really not that great on Tahm, I build steelcaps in 95% of my games so if you dont really know when to, just go steelcaps all the time. Currently experimenting with sorcerers when people recomended it to me on reddit, will update on this later! First recall, always try to get bamis, if you have a recall where you cant finish frostfire afterwards you go giantsbelt and maybe even anathemas before frostfire, just get a feel for it, I rarely build components for frostfire, health early game is really strong due to the synergy with your passive and abilities. If really ahead go demonic otherwise just opt in for the best items. Thornmail against heals, randuins against heavy ad or crit, spirit against ap and you are ahead, abyssal for a supportive playstyle, warmogs if you feel like going bonkers.
The redemption and knight's vow are VERY situational.
Redemption is really good if you are very behind and have to play much more supportive, knight's vow if you find a teammate who is ahead while you are behind and you can trust their plays.

Matchups and Synergies
Dont really care much for synergies, usually try to play to solo carry but any good gankers are nice, good divers are also nice. Will update more in the future as i play more matchups.
Matchups
Akshan
Champion
Medium/Skill based
Dont try anything early, wait for 5-6 to go in, if you ever get on top of him you murder him. Try to bait his swing out with Q or autos then just wait for him to walk up for a free all in.
Aatrox
Champion
Hard
Bramble early, make sure to not get hit with passive autos early, dont be afraid to walk into him to dodge his q
Akali
Champion
Easy
Rarely has damage to kill you, can be annoying with her dashes and mobility, but get early bamis so you can see her in her shroud if you can try to R her as she uses E.
Camille
Champion
Easy
Dont trade level1 she outheals your damage with grasp/W, spam poke with Q and try to get stuns, eat her as she uses E and you should win. If you miss Q's you die otherwise you dont.
Gwen
Champion
Hard.
Not that difficult since last patch, they nerfed her truedamage so its managable. Go ignite if struggling with this matchup. My tactic is to usually eat her in to the tower by setting up a freeze. If you are nowhere close to ulting her to tower and you are fighting. When she uses her W you just w out of there. She has no cc so cant cancel it.
Darius
Champion
Hard
So this matchup is really skill based, if you are not confident or just dont want to struggle take ignite tp in this lane, you can time out his bleed with your R if he hasnt hit you in a few seconds.
Tryndamere
Champion
VERY EASY
You are always way too tanky for him to be able to kill you, just look for grasp trades, when he has no fury you can look for all-ins, try to stun him, force his ult and then eat him and let his ult run out.
Combos
VIDEOS COMING ON COMBOS WHEN I GET THEM
Q-W is great, if you hit q you most likely hit your W as well.
R-Q, this will need a greater explanation video so will try to make one soon! But go into practice range, the yellow bar around your R when you devoured them, right before they get automatically spit out you want to press q. The yellow bar kind of freezes for a split second and thats when you press it.
W from bush, I just dont get how people always fall for this, but go into a bush if you want to engage, W and they just brainfart and you can kill them with aa-Q-aa-R-R-Q.
Tips
In many lanes you can freeze the wave outside of turret range and get three stacks to ult them into tower, this is really effective in matchups where the opponent doesn't play Flash or whenever their Flash is on cooldown. I recommend to start tracking the cooldowns on their flashes to remember when this is a possibility!
Summary
I hope you enjoyed this guide and it was helpful! If you did please like it and comment any critique! Thanks alot for reading! I also have a video guide thats almost finished but I quit working on it because I dont enjoy tahm kench as much nowadays. If you'd like me to complete the guide and maybe upload some content please subcribe here!
