You can swap

Legend: Alacrity
with
Legend: Tenacity
if the enemy team is very high cc. Similarily
Unflinching
can be swapped with
Revitalize
if the enemy team is low on cc and slows. In certain matchups we will discuss lower in the guide it can also be preferrable to change
Second Wind
with
Bone Plating
. You also want to change your minor rune from
Armor
to
Magic Resist
if you are playing vs an ap top. You always want to have double
Adaptive Force
as it really improves early
The Darkin Blade
damage.

Hi my in game name is FetalLotus1, I have been playing league since season 9 and have peaked gold 3 in ranked. I mostly do 1v1's vs high level players (diamond+) wich is how I learned most of the matchups I will talk about in the guide. I am a toplane main and one trick Aatrox. For this guide, I will try to teach you all I have learned from looking at the best aatrox players and how to implement their teachings in your own games.

Why play AATROX

Strong points:

  • strong laning
  • skill based champion
  • almost no impossible lanes
  • high carry potential in teamfights
  • big shiny red numbers
  • very strong mid game
  • can play very agressively
  • can turn 1v2 and 1v3s in his favor if played well
  • gigachad champion

Weaknesses:

  • falls off in the late game
  • cannot deal with super minions
  • weak to antiheal
  • weak to chain cc in teamfights
  • exploitable early game (level 1-3) if you miss a lot of your Q's
    The Darkin Blade

Power Spikes:

Here is a graph that quickly explains aatrox's power level based only on his levels.

As is the case with any toplaner, if you can get a level before the enemy top the power in this graph can be considered as even higher.

You are very strong at level 4,5 and 6 and can beat a lot of top laners on those levels even if you have a disadvantage of any form ( items, minion wave, team assistance).

Jayce even if he has no mana is 1 level up with a big minion wave and gets assisted by his jg.

If you are in a ranged matchup another very big power spike is

Serrated Dirk
wich can let you one shot squishy top laners with a full combo.

with 2 autos 2 Q's and ult i get this kayle from 60 to 0%hp.

Your first item (

Eclipse
,
Goredrinker
,
Divine Sunderer
) no matter wich will always be a huge spike for aatrox as all of them increase his healing and dmg while synergising with his ult
World Ender
for bonus healing and ad growth.

Your next big power spike after that is your lvl 13. THIS IS WHEN YOU NEED TO MAKE PLAYS, lvl 13 is the point of the games where you should be at your strongest with almost 2 items completed and your Q

The Darkin Blade
and your e
Umbral Dash
fully maxed. If you opted for
Divine Sunderer
into
Black Cleaver
you will have enough cdr to e twice during a combo maximizing your hits with the edge of
The Darkin Blade
. On top of that you will get very high healing from
Umbral Dash
passive omnivamp.

Finishing

Black Cleaver
is another big spike for him especially vs tanky tops who have a lot of total
Armor
. The ability haste it gives also lets him do his Q's very often considering your
The Darkin Blade
will be maxed by the point you get it, this will in turn let you shred the armor off the enemy front lines for your team without having to be completely melee range.

Your last 3 items

Serylda's Grudge
,
Death's Dance
,
Force of Nature
focus on improving your survivability and boost your dmg output since you will begin to get outscaled by this point in the game. Without
Serylda's Grudge
you will often lack the damage needed to heal enough to not die during fights wich is why I reccomend it as a 3rd item. After that your damage is high enough to pierce trough most champions and you can thus focus on being more survivable with
Armor
or
Magic Resist
as needed from the game.

VS TANKS:

Since most tanks players will respect your damage and be very hard to catch and kill I like to get an early cull as they generally lack the damage to punish your buy and you get free gold from it. As for your first item,

Divine Sunderer
is a severely underated item on aatrox as it lets you heal ridiculous amounts of hp from your autos, has all the stats
Aatrox
likes and gives you up to 20% armor pen thanks to its mythic passive. All of these reasons makes it a must buy vs tanky opponents, especially if they rush armor.

If you are playing vs a bruiser a good way to optimize your itemization is to buy long swords and boots on your first back to have time to see if they are going to build

Bramble Vest
, if they do I advise not to buy
Eclipse
as the lethality gets hard countered by the 30 armor from bramble vest and you are much better off getting
Divine Sunderer
instead. At 6 items having
Divine Sunderer
and
Serylda's Grudge
will net you a 50% armor penetration making you a damage treath to the beefiest of tanks.
