About Gwen

Gwen is an AP heavily scaling champ that provides utility for the team to fill different roles from frontline AP damager, to tank shredder, to safe splitpusher, and so on similar positions. She is a good into melee team fighter that does struggle against a mostly ranged comp, but has no reason to be afraid of them if played in the right scenarios.

She has a pretty decently high skill ceiling that takes time to fully master, but when given the chance and taking the time to learn the ins-and-outs of her abilities, she's a force to be called overpowered and adaptable to most situations.

Always remember: Her early game isn't the strongest, so you shouldn't expect to go in and be insanely capable of a 1v1 with every champ right away, you have to scale. If you can't take the patience to wait till mid-late game to make a massive impact, Gwen may not be for you.

Pros & Cons Of Gwen

Pros

Heavily Adaptable | Late game monster | Tank Shredder | Easy Building Path

Cons

Weak Early Game | Squishy Champion | Bad Blind Pick

Runes

  • Go-To Runes
  • Ranged Matchups
  • Quick Clips
  • Full Tank Gwen

Conqueror
is Gwens best main rune easily without a double, ramping up her already decently impressive damage and giving it even more of a kick to power her up and giving you healing that can sway the battle since you heal off your damage you do.
Fleet Footwork
works best to heal and keep ranged champs closer, and just makes her a force overall but if you dont like it you can keep Conqueror. She does have mana issues so I'd always take
Presence of Mind
if you go the precision page. You can transfer
Legend: Tenacity
to
Legend: Alacrity
if you rather have attack speed over tenacity, but since you already get alot of attack speed with the builds, Tenacity works to keep you in a fight with less risk of CC holding you back. You can swap out
Last Stand
for
Coup de Grace
as preferred.

Contrary as well, Tank Gwen is not a troll pick. I'd keep the first runepage the same except change out Unflinching for

Overgrowth
and maybe
Bone Plating
for
Conditioning
to max out the power of tank. If you wanna go full tank, you can take the build with
Grasp of the Undying
instead, but you lose out a bit of your damage.

Summoner Spells

    Ignite
    and
    Teleport
are what I mostly take for the aggressive approach, being able to have grievous on your side while also being capable of going to any part of the map just as much helps. You can substitute teleport for
    Ghost
    or
    Exhaust
as you see fit however if it is your preference to keep up with enemies but I'd always take ignite if you can.

    Item Build Explanation

    Building As AP

Playing as AP, you'll always, unless they're massively mobile and you need help keeping htem still, you'll always want to build

    Riftmaker
first for the bigger true damage into
    Nashor's Tooth
for stronger on-hit and it is Gwens 2 best items to build on her overall and gives her not only better scaling power, but also makes her capable of 1v1ing enemies on a better scale.
    Everfrost
is a good mythic alternative for mobile comps and provides you with decent health and AP.
    Rod of Ages
isn't as good as Rift but in some situations is better than Everfrost, so it's up to you if you decide to take it but it's a risk/reward playstyle making you scale later than normal.

Third Item, and what might confuse you, is

    Guinsoo's Rageblade
but trust me, it is not a troll pick to have. It gives you more attack speed, more on-hit, and will count every third auto as 2 autos meaning your Q will stack faster and do 2 autos in 1 for more auto damage output. If you don't feel like you want to use that, you can sub it for
    Morellonomicon
if they have heavy lifesteal, or
    Zhonya's Hourglass
    for armor/stasis

Fourth and Fifth final items are based off preference and enemy comp, but a good suggestion is

    Cosmic Drive
for fourth for that movement to gap close, and last is situational between
    Morellonomicon
    ,
    Frozen Heart
    ,
    Randuin's Omen
    ,
    Spirit Visage
    ,
    Rabadon's Deathcap
    or even
    Abyssal Mask
depending on your situation and preference.
    Morellonomicon
for grievous as needed if not built. If you don't need it, you can always take
    Rabadon's Deathcap
for more damage. The other items listed are of your preference.
    Frozen Heart
works to reduce attack speed champs power by slowing AS, or
    Randuin's Omen
to slow enemies, while reducing crit and AD. For MR,
    Spirit Visage
is definitely useful to boost your passives healing, or you can take
    Abyssal Mask
to reduce enemies MR while boosting your own to raise your damage indirectly

    Bulding As Hybrid Tank

Contrary to how it sounds, this kind of build isn't troll. In fact with how well Gwens AP scales overall it can be prety viable if your team lacks any frontline and you feel too squishy to do it for them.

    Firstly, always try to build

    Nashor's Tooth
to keep your AP up and steady so that it doesn't fall behind on you and make you lose the lane phase. Afterwards, your second item should be your mythic depending on your CS and gold income currently. If you're good on CS and not at all behind, go
    Jak'Sho, The Protean
for that powerful tanky ability and AOE as it's making her tank power even stronger, and will provide you with insane boosted power for the entire team for you to frontline. A more supportive build item is
    Radiant Virtue
which will increase your max health after you ult, but also in the exchange, you get 15 ability haste [ult excluded] and heal for 1% of your max health every 3 seconds and raised by 100% based on missing health. If you don't feel you want to be a more frontline tank sitting and being beefy, you can always stay beefy, but use this to give your allies support.

Third Item, unless the enemy team is fully AP or they have an AD champ that's doing nothing, always go

    Thornmail
for poke punishment and grievous. Otherwise if they're mostly AP, go
    Spirit Visage
or if you'd prefer not to build
    Cosmic Drive
    fourth, go
    Demonic Embrace
third then go either of those 2 items

    Fourth Item should be

    Cosmic Drive
always unless you haven't built Thornmail/Spirit Visage yet. No substitute as building
    Demonic Embrace
would feel pointless. Final item depends on their comp being
    Frozen Heart
    or
    Randuin's Omen
for more Armor and to slow enemies a bit, or you can build
    Force of Nature
for more MR built as stacks and MS, or take
    Abyssal Mask
to reduce enemy MR while giving yourself MR in the process if they have a mix of AP/Tanks.
    Sunfire Aegis
is easily now a great Armor item now and should be recommended in ANY build that you might run into involving mostly AD.

    Patch 12.22 Gwen Info

Gwen in this patch is going to be insanely better with the rise of

    Heartsteel
incoming on most beefy champs like Sion, Mundo, even some Sett players, etc.

You do max health damage with your passive and overall are just an insane force if they decide to build that much damage, giving you more damage, healing and even better scaling than ever.

    Building

    Jak'Sho, The Protean
on Gwen will make her tank wise alot stronger now if you follow the Tank path. She will be a force in both ways, and trust me, you won't want to mess with the Queen Of Snips when she enters the battle.

    Conclusion

Gwen is a very versatile, multi-position filling AP champion with potential to outscale everyone when done right and very scary as a champion when you learn her properly to get the ins-and-outs of her kit to the fullest potential.

She does take time to fully master despite having a mostly straight forward kit, however if you take the time to learn her, then I give you my best and my support!

Now go cut apart your opponents in the rift future potential Gwen lovers!
