Hello, I am He11sedge. I have picked up Volibear recently and I have found great success with his Grasp of the undying rune page.
In this guide I wanna share my thoughts on why, in my opinion, it is better than Press the attack on the top lane.
Why Is grasp better than PTA
To begin with the most obvious reason, it makes volibear more tanky bruiser like he should be.
Another reason it is better its because, though you might lose damage on the early game, you get to scale from the moment you proc the first grasp till the last, because of how his W scales. His W gives him more damage when he builds AD and HP and since with every Grasp proc he gains a small amount of HP that translates into more damage on his kit.
One more reason is the fact that you get a very strong level 1 lane since going with the Resolve tree lets you get the rune Shield bash, which if you combine with your E on level one you deal a lot of damage while also getting a big shield and slowing the enemy down which enables you to proc Grasp, getting more HP, and lastly getting your passive up giving you even more damage.
Let's talk about itemization
First of all, Divine sunderer is a no brainer, you get to deal more damage with your W while also healing for an amount that is not affected by grievous wounds. This item is pairing really well with Volibears kit since consequent hits with your W on a single target already heals you for a big amount, with these 2 heals you can easily turn around 1v1 fights even if it seams like your enemy can kill you.
As of for boots, you get either plated steelcaps or mercury's treads, depending on your opponents.
Thornmail is a great item against champions that depend on their ability to heal, such as Aatrox, Darius, Dr.Mundo and Renekton. This is also a great item against a Mordekaiser top with a AD jungler, since Mordekaiser prefers most of the times to build Riftmaker.
From there your next items should be tank items that are against your opponents. A thing to remember is Spirit visage > force of nature because you can heal a lot more from your W and your R, and you dont really need the movement speed that much since you can build Dead man's plate.

Summoner Spells
You almost always want to run Flash Teleport instead of ignite since you'll get grievous wounds either way.
Also teleport enables you to control the map after the 14th minute, or even before that sometimes, and also lets you get back to lane quicker.

Summary
Going Grasp with the undying makes your your game way more safe and not a glass cannon in the frontline. It also allows you to turn fights that you would lose otherwise and make your easier to handle in the late game.
