Introduction and history

Welcome to my guide to Garen in the jungle. I am NicknameMy, playing League of Legends since Season 1. I got to gold basically every season and then stopped playing ranked as that was never my focus. I rather experiment with unusual picks and theorycraft new strategies with them as that makes me more fun than hardcore grinding. From things like attack speed

Cho'Gath
(Thanks HotshotGG) to Attack Speed pre-rework
Nunu & Willump
,
Taric
jungle (check out lightrocket2),
Sejuani
support or
Nasus
support (the LS special). I mainly play jungle and support because my mechanics are rather bad and that means my last hitting is very supbar. I rather like to strategize.

S1 Draft Racing (me Tristana)

Since I like champions with simple mechanics, of course I also played a lot of Garen in the past. S1 where you stacked Sunfire Cape's and your

Judgment
obliterated everyone was a fun time, even with the Villain system you could still demolish some people. But more and more I didn't like playing him toplane as he had many terrible matchups and couldn't really get through lane anymore, especially with more and more ranged top laners showing up. So I searched for an alternative and started trying out Garen in the jungle from S9 forwards with the release of
Predator
.

The idea of the first iteration was to go fast to maximise the damage dealt with

Celerity
, which gave you AD based on your movement speed. So it featured items like
Youmuu's Ghostblade
,
Dead Man's Plate
and
Trinity Force
to run very quickly at enemies and oneshot them with Q->E->R. Jungle clear was hard for Garen back then as he didn't have bonus damage on E to monsters or passive staying on during jungling, but I made it work. But since then,
Celerity
's AD from movement speed got removed and
Predator
got nerfed, but for that the Garen rework was introduced which first made the passive no longer stop from monsters and then also increased the damage done to monsters by Garen's Judgment by 50%.

With that, Garen's clear speed reached competetive level with other junglers. Another thing introduced then was the item rework which gave you a dash through

Stridebreaker
. This made Garen jungle even competetively viable as shown by Dom1nant even at EU Masters, as his issue of not reaching anyone easily was fixed. It also marked the switch from
Predator
to
Conqueror
as it was necessary to fight enemies early and
Predator
was nerfed and no longer needed as
Stridebreaker
's dash fixed that problem.

But then soon after that

Stridebreaker
's dash was removed and for me the item then felt rather useless, so I had to experiment with other stuff like
Trinity Force
again, until the 12.10 and 12.11 patches hit and made
Sunfire Aegis
a strong option to play a more tanky Garen that relies less on one-shotting the enemy backline but rather plays for crushing the enemy frontline thanks to your % damage ult and armor shredd. Plus it abuses
Courage
to make you the tankiest champion in the game, means you will always come out ahead compared to the enemy frontline and helps you easily survive enemy backline fire. Update: Even tho the tank build still works nicely, after resolve tree got nerfed I started experimenting with other builds like
First Strike
+
Galeforce
+
Mortal Reminder
, but finally I switched to the lethality build as it works nicely against the durability patch increased armor as you take all of that away.
Youmuu's Ghostblade
+
Prowler's Claw
+
Black Cleaver
+
Judgment
armor shredd get you through anyone. Also the buff to assassin mythics which gives +5 ms per legendary helps a lot as well.

Strengths and weaknesses

Garen's strengths and weaknesses are really well defined by what a Juggernaut, the class Garen represents, is. If he gets close to you, he kills you, but he has a hard time getting there. Compared to other Juggernauts, Garen lacks cc to keep enemies close once he is close, but for that he has more tankyness and a very fast damage combo. And thanks to this he can build very aggressive for the first 2 items and only has to build more tanky afterwards. You assassinate everyone who isn't a full tank easily in one combo and even full tanks can take a lot of damage if necessary.

Oh, and one thing I often hear is "Garen is strong early and weak late". That is actually completely false. The weakest point for Garen is actually pre 6, his strongest phase is from 9-16 and after that he gets weaker again.

On Garen, maxing

Judgment
is absolutely necessary as it increases clear speed a lot and also a point in
Judgment
increases your damage overall the most. After that max
Decisive Strike
as you need the damage and mobility to assassinate them. Points in
Courage
are very valuable, but if you put points into it earlier you will feel the lack of damage and mobility.

Jungling & Ganking

Garen jungle clear speed in 3.15

Update: With the new

Ghost Poro
strat, you can safely clear Chickens with only spinning on top of the big one. Make sure you place your first
Stealth Ward
in mid on the enemy side just outside tower range (in the middle of the 2 walls) so in an even lanestate it procs automatically. If that somehow doesn't work you need to do the old clear.

While jungling with Garen seems rather simply at first, there is a lot of manipulation and the usage of the fact that

Judgment
does more damage to the closest enemy to maximise clear speed. So it is easy to start, but hard to master. Sustain is never a problem for Garen thanks to
Perseverance
, the only time you drop rather low is if you do Blue and Gromp at the same time. You always want to start with Red Buff and then do Krugs, Chickens, Wolves and then Blue and Gromp as the same time as it is way quicker than any other start. And you need to full clear and get Crab afterwards to get enough gold for your first back
Berserker's Greaves
.

After you finished your clear, watch for easy gank opportunities where the enemy is overextend in lane or has low HP. If you find one, run at him so you come from behind with

Ghost
+
Decisive Strike
, once you hit him use
Judgment
and kill him. If you have
Demacian Justice
finish him off with that, but be very careful that it does enough damage as it has an animation that puts you out of range and it also stops
Judgment
. But also don't wait too long, otherwise the enemy gets out of its range. It requires some experience to know when
Demacian Justice
kills and when not, but the general rule is better be safe than sorry.

Teamfighting

In teamfights, you basically do the same thing as before, but this time make sure you have your team behind you. Run at the closest target and just kill it, giving your team a huge advantage in a 5v4. If one enemy is very fed and you can reach him, kill that one instead, if possible. If you drop low but the fight continues, get out of it and wait for a little bit or do a camp (chickens preferred) to heal back up and rejoin later.

Ban Vayne every game

Seriously, believe me, if you ban

Vayne
every game, your overall winrate will increase with Garen.
Vayne
's whole kit is made to counter yours, she does % max hp true damage which makes the whole tank build worthless, she can avoid your
Decisive Strike
by going invisible and if you ever get close to her she knocks you back and maybe even stuns you, this matchup is just unplayable. All other matchups are playable, but not
Vayne
.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading my guide to hidden art of Garen jungle. I hope you liked reading through all these walls of text with in-depth explanaition why I am building Garen like this and why I started jungling Garen in the first place. Also check out the Garenmains discord server where everyone will tell you how bad this build is and that you should never use it, very funny guys. I wish you great success with Garen in the jungle and maybe one day you could be like Dom1nant and play him in proplay.
