Elise Master Guide - ALL Roles

Updated for Patch Version [13.7]

Welcome to my Comprehensive Guide to

Elise
. A little background on me, I am a very casual League of Legends player. I have been around on and off since about early 2012, and I have been playing Elise pretty much since her RElise in late 2012. I play mostly for fun. I have tried my hand at Solo Q on multiple occasions and have placed high Gold, but I have never taken it too seriously and have never put in more than 100+ ranked games in a single season. If you are looking for a guide from a high ranking player on what is meta and what is most optimal for the current state of the game, you are unfortunately in the wrong place. If you are looking for some insight from someone who has countless, invaluable hours on Elise and can offer fun and viable builds into varying matchups, then enjoy the remainder of the guide.

Top Lane

As far as I am concerned, in order to be an impactful top laner, you need to be able to do 1 of 2 things:

  1. 1. Have an outstanding presence in teamfights, or
  2. 2. Be an incredibly potent split-pusher
  3.

If you don't know by now, Elise is on the lower end of teamfight usefulness. Her main contributions to teamfights are either: being able to isolate a target and pick them off, draw as many enemy abilities as possible then Zhonyas/Rappel, or be a mid line cocoon-bot. Fortunately, Elise EXCELS at split-pushing. She is amazingly fast at taking down towers by herself, and she can 1v1 pretty much every single champion in the game.

Tanky Spider

Bully your laner and be able to absorb a lot of damage/abilities during teamfights for your team. Stick onto targets easily.

Jungle

As of right now (13.7) early game clearing and aggressive ganking is really good, and that is pretty much what Elise is known for. I won't be covering any clearing guides but I will share some builds and tips.

Assassin Spider

Standard one-shot playstyle. Make good picks and use tempo to win the early/mid game.

Electrocute
also works in lieu of DH.

Mid Lane

Believe it or not, Elise has plenty of tools at her disposal to be a viable midlaner. She has decent wave control and has plenty of kill pressure and tower pressure to be a solid mid lane choice.

Assassin Spider

Nearly identical to the jungle build. Standard one-shot playstyle. Take good electrocute trades and capitalize on your mid laners cooldowns.

Bot Lane

If you ever find yourself Bot Lane and wanting to play

Elise
, be prepared for a World of pain. Not to say that it isn't doable by traditional methods, but playing Elise in a lane where she is not meant to be played in means you have to play her in ways that she is not meant to be played.

%Tank Spider

Grind out the laning phase to become an annoying hellspawn demon for the enemy Bot Laner.

Support

Besides Jungle, Support is Elise's most traditional and recognizeable role. Popularized by Lehends who hit Rank 1 with it in SoloQ in 2016,

Elise
Support is an aggressive burst damage support looking to pick off one of the enemy laners and 2v1 the other. Late game, she is a great Cocoon Bot with good mobility.

Assassin Spider

Nearly identical to the jungle/mid build. Standard one-shot playstyle. Look to take short, quick trades. She is like an AP

Pyke
.

Mechanical Tips & Tricks

This section contains all sorts of neat things that you can perform on Elise. It ranges from common combos that you might know never even had played Elise, to things that Elise players might not even know or understand entirely. I am certain that I am missing a few things here, but these are the ones that I can think of as of right now.

Note: I will be adding the missing videos as I go, so stay tuned.

Passive -
Spider Queen

Long-Ranged Melee Attack

If you throw out a Human Form AA then immediately swap to Spider Form, when the AA lands it will be counted as a Melee attack due to you being in Spider Form. This has it's advantages since it will deal extra damage AND heal you for a certain amount. You can also take advantage of certain items, such as these:

Relic Shield
/
Steel Shoulderguards

Execute minions at a higher HP total with "ranged" attack

Iceborn Gauntlet

The Slow from Iceborne will be more effective if your empowered attack is "melee"

Normal Minions Movement Speed: 423

Minion Movement Speed after Ranged Auto: 328

Minion Movement Speed after Long-Ranged Melee Attack: 232 (HUGE DIFFERENCE)

Grasp of the Undying

The healing and max health gain from Grasp will be increased if you use a "melee" attack

Grasp Max HP Gain from Ranged Attack example: 4

Grasp Max HP Gain from Long-Ranged Melee Attack example: 7

(Q) Human Form - Neurotoxin

Typically your combo starter. Does tons of damage into tanks. Great poking tool.

No known special interactions as far as I can tell. I could be missing something however, so I will edit this section if I find anything.

(Q) Spider Form - Venomous Bite

Your combo finisher / gap closer, does TONS of damage

Double Jump

If your target dies during the animation, your ability will not go on cooldown but you will still travel the distance. Because of this, you can do a neat trick and Q >

Smite
> Q again to close the gap.

Smite Bite

This is a common tactic with junglers who have a huge burst ability;

Feast
,
Consume
etc. Similar to the Double Jump, you essentially Q then
Smite
during the Q animation, except rather than smiting before your damage hits them, you want to Smite as closely as you can to the Q damage. It is still important to Smite before the Q damage since the Q does more damage the lower HP% the target has, but you want it to be as close as possible. I just coined this term at the time of writing this guide, and AFAIK it has yet to be called this.

(W) Human Form - Volatile Spiderling

HUGE Aoe damage and great poke / vision tool.

Spider Bomber

This is a pretty well known trick by now, if you cast your W and it has yet to hit something, you can go into

Spider Form
and Q to cause the spider to jump in a straight line, ignoring terrain and attacking the first enemy that it comes into contact with. This is really useful for surprising your opponent with damage and style points, but more imporantly it can create angles that you might not normally have access to.

Free Vision

Your Spiderling gives vision in a small area surrounding it when it travels, giving you a safe way to check areas in the Fog of War. It is untargetable so the opponents cannot destroy it unless they wait it out or tank the damage.

(W) Spider Form - Skittering Frenzy

Crazy Attack Speed steroid and what allows you to shred Towers.

AA Reset

You can reset your AA Timer with this ability, which will increase your damage output more than you think. If you use any of the

Press the Attack
builds, this is EXTREMELY important to master.

(E) Human Form - Cocoon

Your combo starter / pick tool. Landing this is one of the many things that separates good Elise's from bad ones.

Flash > Cocoon

Flash
ing into Cocoon is your main way of long distance engage. You can cover a HUGE distance with this and mastering this is what separates the good Elise's from the bad ones.

Cocoon > Flash

Even though this sounds like the last trick, it is LARGELY different in uses.

Flash
> Cocoon is for long range, and Cocoon >
Flash
is for short range. This one cancels the start up animation for your Cocoon, and is useful for either dodging a skillshot OR quickly closing the gap and somewhat hiding the Cocoon itself making your burst even more of a surprise.

(E) Spider Form - Rappel

This ability is pretty much what Elise is known for, it is basically a free

Zhonya's Hourglass
with much better properties.

Targeting / Non-targeting

Knowing when to cast this on a target vs when to cast it on an open space is very important when mastering

Elise
. Casting on a target will bring you up in the air, give you brief vision in the area, and then drop you down on their location from when you targeted them. Casting it without a target will bring you up, give you vision of the area and let you choose to either land from where you went up or land onto a target. This is important to distinguish because if you are chasing or plan on attacking an enemy you should target them, but if you are making an escape or a sneaky play you should cast without a target, access the situation and jump accordingly. You can also target interactables with this ability, such as the various plants, jungle camps or even enemy wards.

Tower Aggro

Tower Aggro juggling is what makes Elise one of the best, if not the best, turret diver in the game. Rappel drops Aggro if it is currently on you and cycles to the next target, most players know that part. What most players DO NOT know, is that even if no more allies are around to pass the Tower Aggro to, as long as you have at least 1 Spiderling they will come down first and absorb the Tower Aggro before you. This is very useful when you kill your target under tower but have no allies surrounding you.

COMING SOON

(R) Ultimate -
Spider Form

Your Ultimate Ability is what gives you acces to the little Spiderling guys. They may be tiny, but they are a GIGANTIC part of Elise's kit.

Aggro Juggling

This is more for when you are Jungling. Your Spiderlings can tank hits for you and can Aggro the Jungle Camps. If you position correctly, you can cause the monsters to stutter their attacks and give you a little bit more time to attack. This is really useful when taking Rift Herald, because the Spiderlings can be on one side of the Herald while you are on the opposite side.

Wave Control

This is somewhat similar to Aggro Juggling but is more for Laning. When in

Spider Form
, your Spiderlings will attack anything that you are attacking, if you haven't selected a target, they will start attacking the closest target to you in a small radius (about the range of your Venomous Bite.) You can use this to your advantage by allowing them to hold the wave for you while you stand off at a safe-ish distance without having to tank minion damage. This is extremely helpful when you are solo laning trying to freeze it, but also when you are Support and are holding the wave for your ADC.

Zhonya's Hourglass

This item is already insane on

Elise
because it gives her incredible stats AND the Active combined with Rappel makes her difficult to deal with. What some players don't know, is that when you Rappel, your Spiderlings go up with you, but if you Zhonya's your Spiderlings DO NOT Zhonya's with you. While you are golden and untargetable they are basically protecting you and tearing up anyone that gets near. This can lead to some very cool outplays.
