Welcome to my in-depth guide on onlyguides.com for
Caitlyn
ADC.
My name is Lukke and I'm professional ADC Coach. I'm mostly playing on EUW where I peaked around 350 LP. So far I've been coaching for more than one year with hundreds of satisfied students. In the past. I've played other MOBA games like Dota 2 and Smite which helped me view the game from different angle.
I've been playing League of Legends and also ADC since season 6 and I'm basically playing every single ADC and also a lot of mages or off meta picks on bot lane. I'm trying to outsmart my opponents and get ahead with the best possible runes and best possible build.
Caitlyn
is one of my favorite ADCs since she was one of the first ADCs I've mastered.
Caitlyn
is easy to play on a decent level but there is a massive difference between average
Caitlyn
and insane
Caitlyn
. I play
Caitlyn
only if I have support like
Lux
,
Karma
, or
Renata Glasc
because my goal is to smash early. I like that with
Caitlyn
you must play aggressively during the laning phase and you must get ahead. Keep reading and you will know everything you need to know about
Caitlyn
.
Patch 12.4
So what changed that I'm making
Caitlyn
guide? Well first of all nobody makes
Caitlyn
guide here and also she is strong even after her nerf on
Piltover Peacemaker
but now since
Renata Glasc
is in a game they have decent synergy. You can combo your W:
Yordle Snap Trap
and
Renata Glasc
's Q:
Handshake
for chain CC. Not only that
Caitlyn
is known for lane dominance and if you face melee support together with
Renata Glasc
you will be able to procc
Renata Glasc
's passive a lot.
Ashe
got placebo buff so there is a chance that players will start playing her since she is strong against
Caitlyn
but overall every single laning phase should be easy for you.
Caitlyn Guide Overview
I will start this Guide with a general build overview, then we move to Spells and Skill Path. After this, we will take deeper look at Runes, Build, and Summoner Spells. In the end, I will tell you how to generally play the Laning Phase, Mid Game, and Team Fights. We will also take a look at few basic and frequently used combos/mechanics. The last part of this guide will be devoted to mathups.
Best Overall Runes
Spells
Skill Priority
Best Overall Build
This would be the most basic
Caitlyn
build that I would recommend but there is way more to know about her build - so we need to adjust our build for every single game. Keep reading and you will for sure understand what will be the best build for your game!
Abilities
I'm on the case.
Caitlyn
has the highest base auto-attack range so make sure you play as aggressively as possible. We need to get ahead early to snowball the game early. Her scaling is decent but it might be a bit harder for you if you don't get ahead early.
Passive
Headshot
Caitlyn
's basic attacks generate a stack, doubled when attacking from the brush. At 6 stacks
Caitlyn
's next basic attack consumes all stacks to become a
Headshot
.
Simple passive. Try to use most of your
Headshot
on enemy champions. Once you get 5 stacks move a bit forward and then auto-attack creep to get
Headshot
and after it use it on the enemy champion. If you move after you get
Headshot
they will be able to run away in time.
You can also
Headshot
enemy turrets - meaning you are an insane pushing monster.
Q
Piltover Peacemaker
Caitlyn
fires a piercing shot in the target direction that deals physical damage to the first enemy. After it expands in width but deals only 50% damage to enemies it passes thereafter.
If enemies step into your
Yordle Snap Trap
will recieve full damage from
Piltover Peacemaker
- which means you can fire it through creeps.
Use it as a poke tool and also for push since we want to have lane priority with
Caitlyn
. We don't want to push 24/7 but securing early level 2 must be always in your favor.
W
Yordle Snap Trap
Caitlyn
sets visible untargetable trap at the target location which grants sight of the area for 1 second (great for scouting so you don't face check) The next enemy champion that springs the trap is rooted for 1.5 seconds, revealed for 3 seconds, takes additional damage from
Headshot
, and becomes immune to further
Yordle Snap Trap
for 3 seconds.
Yordle Snap Trap
is your defining spell. Don't be afraid to spam it next to creeps so enemy ADC has a hard time laning against you. You can also try using it at the same time when they are going for an auto-attack since they can't move - they might step into it a few times.
Another thing that you can do with
Yordle Snap Trap
is hiding it - behind turret (make sure you bind attack champion only) or inside of dead bodies - also a bit harder to spot.
Each extra point into
Yordle Snap Trap
lowers recharge time and extends trap duration by 5 seconds. On rank 3 you get a maximum of 4 traps and on rank 5 you get a maximum of 5 traps. (with 5 traps you can block a lot of chokes). Here is a short video about it:
How to use Caitlyn Traps
E
90 Caliber Net
Caitlyn
fires a net in the target direction and recoils 390 units in the opposite direction. The net deals magic damage to the first enemy hit and slows them by 50% for 1 second.
You can use
90 Caliber Net
into
Piltover Peacemaker
quickly for long-range poke. Even though you dash out your
Piltover Peacemaker
will fire from the original position.
R
Ace in the Hole
Caitlyn
locks onto the target enemy champion and channels for 1 second, revealing them and revealing herself.
Ace in the Hole
is placed on a 5-second cooldown if canceled.
Don't use
Ace in the Hole
only for execution. You can use it during the laning phase for poke as well when enemy support is far away from enemy ADC or you can use it against stealth champions to make sure your team sees them.
Skill Path
Your main spell and spell you max first is usually
Piltover Peacemaker
. But in some cases, you can put only 3 points into
Piltover Peacemaker
and then max your
Yordle Snap Trap
if you want to siege earlier. With a fully maxed
Yordle Snap Trap
we can place 5 traps and block the entire lane and a lot of chokes.
This is overall best possible Skill Path:

You can do a few things differently. If you don't need your
90 Caliber Net
early and you play with
Lux
you can even go Q → W → Q → E. Or just simply Q → W → E if you have some trap set up.
Another thing like I said that you can do differently is putting only 3 points into
Piltover Peacemaker
and then fully maxing your
Yordle Snap Trap
.
Runes
Not let's talk about runes for a bit because there are a lot of options that you can go and how you can adjust them to your specific game. Overall this will be the best and most standard rune page:
But there are more things to talk about so keep reading if you want to have the best possible rune page for your game.
Default
Lethal Tempo
Resolve
Domination
So what exactly can we change? I will start with Keystone and Primary tree and then move to secondary tree rune options.
Best Keystone for Caitlyn
We have two options to choose from. First one is
Lethal Tempo
and the second one is
Fleet Footwork
. So when do we want to take
Lethal Tempo
and when
Fleet Footwork
you might ask?
It is actually simple. We want to take
Fleet Footwork
in cases where we are not able to auto-attack that often. Usually long-range lanes.
On the other hand, we want to take
Lethal Tempo
when we know that we can auto-attack a lot e.g. heavy frontline.
In the majority of my games, I'm running
Fleet Footwork
due to the current meta. But for sure you will run into some games where
Lethal Tempo
will be better. I often decide based on the lane that I'm facing. If I'm against some poke support I would rather take
Fleet Footwork
but against a champion like
Alistar
I take
Lethal Tempo
since I can hit him more frequently.
In the first rune slot, we have once again two options.
Presence of Mind
and
Overheal
. If you can manage your mana pool
Overheal
will be always better, but if you struggle with mana a bit or you want to spam more spells take
Presence of Mind
. I never take
Triumph
since it is a weak rune overall and you must get a lot of kills to be useful. That's why I always take more consistent runes.
Here we have only one real option and that's
Legend: Bloodline
. Obviously, you can take sometimes
Legend: Alacrity
if you play purely for the laning phase and you want to get more value early on, but since we are not building any lifesteal item
Legend: Bloodline
will have high value.
The best rune here is
Cut Down
.
Caitlyn
has low base HP so we will be proccing
Cut Down
even faster. Especially if we start with
Long Sword
and 3
Health Potion
. We will not build any HP so taking
Coup de Grace
is useless and you don't want to drop low as
Caitlyn
so taking
Last Stand
is also useless.
Best secondary page for
Caitlyn
This will be relatively easy and short. Sorcery is the best overall secondary page, Domination is playable and sometimes I would take Resolve. Inspiration is garbage.
Sorcery - Here I take only
Absolute Focus
and
Gathering Storm
. Broken and underused combo. It gives us a lot of AD when the game is not even decided.
Domination - Here you take it because of
Ingenious Hunter
(to lower
Galeforce
cooldown) and another rune can be
Taste of Blood
or
Zombie Ward
/
Eyeball Collection
/
Ghost Poro
. If you need a bit of extra healing take
Taste of Blood
but if you have a free lane take stacking rune. In lower elo, you stack
Eyeball Collection
fastest but higher it will be
Zombie Ward
or
Ghost Poro
.
Resolve - We take this against a lot of assassins when we need extra armor or magic resistance. Key rune is here
Conditioning
and the second one is
Overgrowth
or
Revitalize
. If you play with enchanter take
Revitalize
if not take
Overgrowth
.
What is the best build for Caitlyn?
There are a few items that we can change in our build but overall it stays the same. But still, there are a few important decisions that we must make in our build.
I will start with boots since this is pretty easy and you will be buying the same boots almost every game.
Berserker's Greaves
are best boots for you. Sometimes I rush them but overall rushing Mythic is more important for
Caitlyn
than rushing
Berserker's Greaves
. When I have a full build I sometimes change them for
Plated Steelcaps
in case I need extra armor and also lower auto-attack damage.
Here is a quick item tl;dr. If you want to know more about items then keep reading.
Breakdown
Galeforce
Item
Galeforce
will be most used Mythic. It helps you with your burst and overall mobility. Remember to use it as execution tool. It can be also used defensively.
Kraken Slayer
Item
Usually, I buy
Kraken Slayer
when I have
Lethal Tempo
.
Kraken Slayer
is better if you can auto-attack a lot. So if you don't go only for quick burst but you know that fights will last - go for
Kraken Slayer
.
Immortal Shieldbow
Item
Another option and don't be afraid to buy this item a few times. We are mainly building it because of lifesteal and shield.
Lord Dominik's Regards
Item
Most reliable anti-tank item. If I know that game won't end immediately after I finish the second item then
Lord Dominik's Regards
is better. Try to look at how much armor and extra HP enemies have.
The Collector
Item
Heavy snowball item. In the majority of games,
Lord Dominik's Regards
is better but if we are getting ahead we can buy
The Collector
for 2 item spike. Build Path is much better and also extra 25 AD is noticeable a lot.
Phantom Dancer
Item
Great item to pair with
Kraken Slayer
and
Lethal Tempo
since we want to auto-attack a lot. If you don't need armor penetration
Phantom Dancer
is the best second item. Insane gold value and also cheap item.
Infinity Edge
Item
Build this item as your 3rd item every single game! Spike with
Infinity Edge
is insane. Sometimes I see players building Mythic into
Rapid Firecannon
into
Lord Dominik's Regards
but that's just wrong. They would need to like more than 130 armor for
Lord Dominik's Regards
to be better (in the average game)
Rapid Firecannon
Item
I do not like buying this item early but it is a great 4th item when I need a bit extra range. With it, you will have 800 range and if you pair it with
Headshot
it is a meaningful poke.
Bloodthirster
Item
Great defensive item for
Caitlyn
. Against heavy long-range poke you can go
Bloodthirster
as your second item after
Galeforce
.
Guardian Angel
Item
I do not recommend building
Guardian Angel
. If you die once they will kill you a second time as well. I would rather buy
Death's Dance
or even
Randuin's Omen
.
Starting Items
We have two options. More popular nowadays is to start with
Long Sword
and 3
Health Potion
. This way we can rush our Mythic sooner and also we can procc
Cut Down
since early levels. I start with
Doran's Blade
only in cases where I know that I need an extra 80 HP and won't trade a lot. If you take one bad trade with
Doran's Blade
your laning phase will be doomed.
Which Items are good for
Caitlyn
?
We can start with Mythic. If you want mobility and also you want to burst enemy champion make sure to buy
Galeforce
. You can use it defensively but also aggressively as an execution tool. I go
Kraken Slayer
only when I know that I will auto-attack a lot.
Here are the biggest build errors that
Caitlyn
players do:
Lord Dominik's Regards
vs.
The Collector
Simply - if you want to play aggressively and end the game on two items then
The Collector
is better. But if the game will last longer
Lord Dominik's Regards
will outscale. Here is a quick video about it:
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/yddjhnhrp7
Infinity Edge
vs.
Lord Dominik's Regards
3rd item
In the majority of cases
Infinity Edge
is a better 3rd item. That's why I always say - Build
Infinity Edge
as your 3rd item!
Once again here is a quick video of why:
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/k23ijzoyw3
But what if you don't watch to buy
The Collector
or
Lord Dominik's Regards
as your second item? You can buy
Phantom Dancer
if you can auto-attack a lot and when they are not building armor. Usually, I go
Kraken Slayer
with
Lethal Tempo
into
Phantom Dancer
and
Infinity Edge
because it is relatively cheap.
Phantom Dancer
has a high value for 2600 golds.
Usually, I finish my build with
Bloodthirster
or if I don't build
Zeal
item early I buy
Rapid Firecannon
as my 4th item. Sometimes you can go
Quicksilver Sash
against heavy CC. I do not recommend building
Guardian Angel
on
Caitlyn
. If they kill you once you will die again.
If you will face multiple poke champions you can go
Bloodthirster
as your second item. It will help you a lot. If that is a case go
Galeforce
into
Bloodthirster
.
Summoner Spells
This one will be relatively simple. The most used Summoner Spell will be
Heal
. In games where someone wants to dive in I take
Exhaust
.
Summs
If you need a
Cleanse
against something like
Leona
don't be afraid to take it.
Analyzing Loading Screen
Now I will show you how you can analyze loading screen in this video:
So we want to focus on 3 points:
- Runes & Build
- Matchup
- Other Lanes
Laning Phase
So how do we want to play the lane? We want to play as aggressive as possible especially against melee supports. If we play against melee support try to not leash and also try to hit them as much as possible level 1. Usually you don't want to leash with
Caitlyn
since lane priority is really important.
There is one thing that is common for every single Laning Phase. Track enemy champion's cooldowns! It is really important to play around. If enemy botlane has no cooldown - play aggressive. If youdon'thave cooldowns - play passive.
If you have support that you can chain your
Yordle Snap Trap
with then keep some of them always ready. If not spam them close to the creeps like I showed you in the video.
Once we hit level 6 we can use our
Ace in the Hole
for poke. Getting few plates and staying ahead is the most important thing for
Caitlyn
in early game.
Remember that you don't need to push 24/7, but you can also freeze. If you are ahead it is easier since they can't get close to the wave. If you will end up in this spot where you are freezing make sure to also zone them away from XP.
Mid Game
This will be pretty easy to explain since Mid Game as an ADC is really simple. All we are trying to do is securing Mid Lane priority so we can move towards side lanes or enemy jungle. Obviously, sometimes you won't be able to get Mid Lane priority. In that case, wait until the enemy team shoves it but this time they will be the one with the first move.
In this game period, we must maintain 10 cs per minute without any issues. Don't be afraid to do what is called Cycling - getting timers of enemy camps and few seconds before it spawns get lane priority and move towards that camp (you can really get ahead just from cycling camps). Same thing we do before drake spawns - we secure mid priority so they must go through chokes.
If you are ahead keep pushing your lead by taking turrets, objectives and contesting enemy camps. Honestly, just from contesting every single camp without any fighting, we can slowly secure a free win.
Remember to use your
Yordle Snap Trap
a lot while you are sieging or fighting for drakes. It will be hard for them to contest it when you cover some entrances with your
Yordle Snap Trap
.
Team Fights
So how do we play Team Fights with Caitlyn? You have few styles that you can choose from. Playing around your
Yordle Snap Trap
is the easiest. Not only that you can block chokes with it but you can also dance around them when you are hitting melee champion without any dash.
If anyone steps into your
Yordle Snap Trap
be ready to burst them and when you have 3 items you can even one shot them.
If you will play
Lethal Tempo
with
Kraken Slayer
it is sometimes better to not use your
Piltover Peacemaker
while they are in your auto-attack range because of your attack speed - you will do more damage with your auto-attacks.
Biggest mistake that I see most of the
Caitlyn
players do is not using their auto attack range. You have 650 range so use it. Going too close will be crutial since you are squishy.
Basic Caitlyn's combos
Here I will breakout couple of examples what you can mechanically do in every single game. I will show you mainly easy and frequently used combos for
Caitlyn
.

Matchups and Synergies
Last but not least we will go over
Caitlyn
's matchups and also which supportshould be picked with him. Generally, you want to play
Caitlyn
only with poke support- we want to have lane priority and bully enemy botlane.
Matchups
Synergies
Aphelios
Champion
Relavitely easy matchup since
Aphelios
is bad against long-range. BUT don't trade auto-attack with him level 1 since he has same range as you. Even though you have 2 extra AD it is pointless to trade auto-attack with him since he has more HP.
After his sniper riffle is out you can play more aggressive. Just be careful with Purple gun
Aphelios
will have great gank setup.
Ashe
Champion
This matchup is a bit harder since
Ashe
has high range as well. Even though you have 50 extra range Ashe's slow and
Approach Velocity
will make it a bit harder for you to space against her. Support matchup will decide.
Draven
Champion
Be careful that you are not dying against him early.
Draven
struggles against long-range. Don't give him early kills and play aggressive. You can punish his axes while he is catching them will your spells or auto-attack.
Ezreal
Champion
Ezreal
struggles if he doesn't have lane priority. If you are the one with lane priority he can't hit single Q:
Mystic Shot
so you will be full HP and also stacking
Tear of the Goddess
will be a bit harder for him.
Jhin
Champion
Jhin
is able to stay relatively even and fight you early. You will win only with better support matchup. Usually
Jhin
is being picked into
Caitlyn
since he is able to contest your early power.
Jinx
Champion
Jinx
is another a bit harder matchup for you. Yes, first few levels are easy for you but once she gets multiple points into her Q:
Switcheroo!
she will match your range and will poke you back. Jinx is turbo broken and will outscale you fast.
Kai'Sa
Champion
It is really easy to play against
Kai'Sa
's since she has low range but stay outside of her auto-attack range.
Kai'Sa
's basic trade pattern is auto-attack into Q:
Icathian Rain
into another auto-attacks with
Hail of Blades
. We cannot match this burst so just stay outside of her range and you are good to go. You will always have lane priority.
Kalista
Champion
Her all in power is super strong so be careful. Keep poking her early and you will win this matchup.
Kalista
got buff for armor in this patch so her laning phase is a little bit stronger but you are still winning.
Kog'Maw
Champion
Track
Kog'Maw
's W:
Bio-Arcane Barrage
cooldown and trade with him when he has no W:
Bio-Arcane Barrage
ready. You can get easily lane priority. We must snowball against him since he outscales us.
Lucian
Champion
Another low range ADC. We have basically same game plan against all of them. Get lane priority and try to snowball. We need to be a bit careful on
Lucian
all in especially if he is paired with
Nami
.
Miss Fortune
Champion
One of few ADCs that is able to contest
Caitlyn
early. If
Miss Fortune
starts with W:
Strut
level 1 she can contest level 2 easily. I highly recommend playing
Galeforce
agaisnt Lethality
Miss Fortune
since she can one tap you with E:
Make It Rain
into R:
Bullet Time
. If she start with Q:
Double Up
or E:
Make It Rain
try getting lane priority and play aggressive.
Samira
Champion
You must stomp this matchup. Super easy to play.
Samira
is 500 range ADC that is weak against long range. Bully her level 1 and 2 and she can't even look to all in you.
Senna
Champion
Senna
is underrated early. If you play only to poke you are winning but fist fights is winning
Senna
. Her sustain is also decent against you.
Sivir
Champion
I don't know why someone thinks that
Sivir
is counter to
Caitlyn
. Yes, she can block your
Yordle Snap Trap
but that's it. You have early lane priority and range is also in your favor. Just don't waste your traps early - you will just donate mana to her.
Tristana
Champion
Biggest counter on
Tristana
is
Exhaust
. If she jumps on your head you just
Exhaust
her and win the all in. Play for priority and get ahead. You will have lane priority but she will eventually outscale you.
Twitch
Champion
AP
Twitch
is actually a bit more annoying to play against. He will spam his W:
Venom Cask
in your face and try to pokeyou but you will have lane priority.
AD
Twitch
is "weaker" early. His poke won't be as high but his all in is insanely strong. Be careful on level 3 all in.
Against both AP or AD
Twitch
play
Cut Down
since he has high base HP.
Varus
Champion
Another ADC that is able to do 2 styles. Poke
Varus
is stronger early and I recommend building
Bloodthirster
as your second item if they have multiple poke champions (
Galeforce
into
Bloodthirster
)
If it is on-hit
Varus
you are just playing for lane priority. Due to his passive you need to use your Q:
Piltover Peacemaker
more often on creeps.
Vayne
Champion
Easy matchup and it is hard for
Vayne
to play the lane. Pushing her early and setting up
Yordle Snap Trap
will be really hard for her to play against. Later you can use your
Ace in the Hole
to reveal her.
It is same for other low range ADCs.
Xayah
Champion
Another ADC that can go Lethality and Crit. Crit
Xayah
is insanely weak against you.
Caitlyn
is winning on range.
Against Lethality
Xayah
stay behind creeps so you don't get first hitQ:
Double Daggers
. Again if they have multiple poke champions you can go
Bloodthirster
as your second item.
Zeri
Champion
You must play ultra aggressive. Punishing
Zeri
early is crucial. If you don't punish her early she will hardly outscale you.
Zeri
is insanely broken after level 6 and also with
Trinity Force
. That's her biggest spikes. We must get ahead before these spikes.
Ziggs
Champion
Caitlyn
will have a hard time against
Ziggs
for sure. Yes, you will have lane priority but sieging won't be that effective. Staying even or being a bit behind for
Ziggs
is a win in his book.
Xerath
Champion
Xerath
is
Caitlyn
's biggest counter with
Jinx
. Yes, you will win early as
Caitlyn
but
Xerath
doesn't care. He will outscale you and bully you after getting
Lost Chapter
. He can even go a little bit behind since
Xerath
will play
Future's Market
.
Brand
Champion
Heavy poke support. You play to bully them out of lane and make them suffer with
Brand
. Use
Yordle Snap Trap
next to creeps or turret since you will rarely chain it with brand.
Karma
Champion
I would say second best support for
Caitlyn
.
Karma
has also great poke power but she doesn't have the best
Yordle Snap Trap
set up since root with her W:
Focused Resolve
will work only a few times. She has better peeling power.
Lux
Champion
Best possible support to play with
Caitlyn
. Insanely high poking power and also great
Yordle Snap Trap
set up. Play aggressively and get ahead especially in early levels. Securing level 2 into all in will work especially in lower elo.
Morgana
Champion
A bit overrated support with
Caitlyn
. Yes, root set up is nice but if enemies are smart it is also hard to hit. Against all in she is better than
Lux
due to her
Black Shield
.
Nami
Champion
Great poke, great sustain and also great
Yordle Snap Trap
setup. Yes, few champions have better poke but
Nami
has everything you need. Also one of my favorite to play with.
Renata Glasc
Champion
Like I said in the beginning
Renata Glasc
has decent synergy with
Caitlyn
. We want to procc
Renata Glasc
's passive as much as possible. It is a bit better against melee champion because of her passive and also revive is better against all in. She can also throw enemies into your
Yordle Snap Trap
.
Senna
Champion
Senna
is decent with
Caitlyn
. You both have great poke power and
Senna
has sustain for you as well.
Yordle Snap Trap
setup is not the greatest but it is decent.
Senna
scales great so if you play aggressively you can easily snowball the game with her.
Sona
Champion
If your lane is free and they cannot all in you
Sona
is superior. Her scaling power is insane and her early poke is decent. I call her
Yuumi
on steriods.
Soraka
Champion
With
Soraka
you have to be the one taking damage. You have to peel her because if they poke her she can't heal back that easily. Her poke is also decent. Once again use
Yordle Snap Trap
next to creeps and turret since it is hard to chain with soraka.
Zilean
Champion
Zilean
has low poke power but his slows are annoying to play against. You can easily chain your
Yordle Snap Trap
with double bomb. Also with his movement speed you are able to play aggressively even more.
