Somethings about me.
Hello, My name is He11sedge and I am a Gnar main.
I picked up Gnar on the end of season 9 instantly loving his gameplay, especially the build he was building back then, but seasons change, and so do the champions.
But I was too much into this build that I just couldn't change my play-style so i decided to keep going with it. At first things we going just fine, but then season 11 came with the new items and the champion needed some optimization.
Why not bruiser?
In short, you just cant trust your solo queue teammates.
What I mean is that you need such a perfect timing with your teammates so that when you transform and hit your ultimate they can follow up on it, which mean that they need to have their abilities up, something that very rarely happens.
Now there are exceptions to this statement. If your team has many dps champions such as Jinx as adc, akshan mid or even graves or kindred jungle, you can find success with the bruiser build, but generally speaking having more that one adc on your game is not something that happens everyday.
Why damage?
When building damage on Gnar, you can play the game as a more tanky adc, which eliminates the weakness of the timing with your mega Gnar, since now you can deal insane amounts of damage with auto attacks with the help of your W, making it so you are not reliant on your mega form to be viable in team fights.
Another big strength of this play-style is that, chasing your opponents becomes way more lethal because of you damage and the movement speed you get from your W every time you hit someone 3 times. Vice versa being chased by your opponents can be punishing for them, since you can slow them down with your Q then quickly auto attack them twice while kiting, then escaping with the movement speed you get from W.
Runes
You might be asking, why fleet footwork and not lethal tempo? To answer this question we will have to see why you should take fleet footwork in the first place.
Fleet footwork is a great way to get some health back after a trade or a fight. You might be wondering : "you can just heal it back when you turn mega", and I will tell you that this is not always reliable. Also since fleet footwork charges with movement, and your W give you quite a bit of it, you can charge it way faster than most other champions and therefore you can utilize it more frequently, healing back more and more everytime you use it.
Don't get me wrong, lethal tempo is great on champions that have abilities that stack up and then detonate to do more damage, such Vayne W and Akshan passive, but the thing is that taking lethal tempo on Gnar make him a literate glass cannon, which is not what we are after here.
On some cases where you team needs a more tanky Toplaner you can go with grasp for that extra bit of health that it provides without needing to change the build, a rune pages will be provided down below.

Summoner Spells
You should every time take flash-teleport but if the enemy top laner is heavily based on their healing (like Mundo or Aatrox), you should take ignite.

Some tips and tricks
this one is a basic trick that every Gnar player should know despite the build they are going. If an enemy is ever blocking you from going back to your tower, you can quickly Auto attack them, immediately after use Q and then E on them, to quickly get a W proc giving you speed and making you leap a big distance.
Another tip i can give you is that, if you see that when you are about to turn mega, the enemy laner is falling back, what you can do next time is just E the wave some time before you start getting close to mega Gnar. Most players wont expect this, so you will already have an advantage from that alone, but then if that wasn't enough you can stack your passive on the opponent using you Q and auto attacks, while getting speed from W, getting closer to them and when finally getting mega, you will be already one them.
Some last words
Overall Gnar has a very high skill cap, which means if you can master this champion it can get really powerful. This also means that your first games with him, probably wont be that promising, but with some time and exercise I can assure that in the end this will be a fun champion to have in your champion pool, and also a really strong one too.
