Matchups: Threats & Synergies

Matchups

Generally, matchups vs. melee supports are a lot easier in lane and allow you to scale into the midgame for free, where they won't be able to play the game. Playing against any ranged support is a bit more challenging due to your relatively short range and delay on your shield, which makes mage/adc support matchups especially difficult.

Synergies

In lane, Orianna pairs best with hyperscaling ADCs, as you aren't super useful pre-6 and have a hard time providing the aggression required by champions like Draven. However, once you get your Shurelya's, the movespeed you will be providing to your ADC will allow them to easily kite and chase after enemies and take over the game. That being said, she can work with ADCs that like to go in and sustain through lifesteal (e.g. Samira, Nilah) due to the extra resistances her ball provides. Plus, after level 6, you can ult off of them after they go into melee range.

Runes

You can just take the standard page every game. Celerity makes you even faster and synergieses well with your W and Shurelya's. Cookies are great because they allow you to cast more abilities in lane. Magical footwear's bonus movespeed stacks well with all the other speed boosts you have and allows you to rush mythic without having to worry about buying boots.

You can feel free to swap Gathering Storm for Scorch and to take the attack speed shard over more adaptive force to have more pressure in lane. However, I find that generally you aren't really playing to win lane pre 6 so unless the matchup is easy I would generally just go for Gathering storm. The attack speed shard is also decent in some matchups, especially against melee champs, allowing you to push the wave faster and get more autos off in lane.

Summoner Spells

Always take flash. Ideally, you want heal, since you are going to be playing pretty far back in fights and generally will struggle to get value out of exhaust/ignite. However, if you ADC doesn't want to swap off heal for something like Ghost/Cleanse/Barrier, you should take Exhaust.

Items

For support Orianna, the most important item is Shurelya's Battlesong, as the movespeed it provides is what makes Orianna a viable support. You should aim to finish this as soon as possible every game. As such, you want to avoid building extra components before you finish your mythic with this build. Items like Dark Seal, Boots, and Tear of the Goddess should be avoided (which is why you take Magical Footwear).

Lucidity boots are almost always the best option, as the way you play fights should mean that defensive boots aren't super valuable to you. However, there are some situations where you might benefit from Swiftness boots instead.

Once you finish Boots + Mythic, you want to start building other utility items that (ideally) give you AP + AH. Putrifier is great if they have a lot of healing. Otherwise, Staff of Flowing Water should be your go-to 2nd item. Mikael's can be good too if they have big cc threats like Ashe, Varus, or Lissandra ult.

Your 3rd item will usually be either Staff of Flowing Water or Putrifier, but if you already have Staff and Putrifier is low value then you can opt for either Redemption or Ardent Censer.

Once you reach lvl 13, consider building Wardstone instead of trying to finish a full 2k gold 3rd item. This will allow you to spike again before the game ends, while also allowing you to keep an item slot open for control wards (super important for objective control).

Skill Path

The skill path doesn't have much variation. Starting Q is almost always best as you can put the ball in a bush to watch for invades, but if you aren't doing that and you get invaded you will be strongest if you start E. You can level up E at level 2 instead of W in certain matchups, especially if they're playing an engage support and you are expecting them to go in before you hit level 3.
