First Buys should look similar to this. Alistar suffers from mana problems early so first back you should pick up a Tear and maybe boots if you have the coin. After tear, your next item needs to be Bami's Cinder as it greatly increases your wave clear and trading potential. Then finish your Sunfire ASAP followed immediately after by Boots of Lucidity.
HOW IT WORKS
Alistar Top has remarkable sustain and shockingly little need for CS, which his early game struggles with anyway. You should be more concerned with getting XP than taking bad trades for CS. In other words, play it safe. Early game, use your Q (knockup) to avoid prolonged trades and simply walk away behind your wave. Alistar's E does big damage when you get the stun off, and since that damage scales with your level and not the ability rank you can rank it up last and still get major value from it. This is why you rank up Q and W first.
Play safe, try to proc your Grasp when you can, and don't worry about taking risky CS. Your passive gives you incredible sustain so you don't have to leave too often, soaking up all that delicious XP. Try to save your teleport so that if you *do* have to back at a bad time, like when a big wave is about to crash into your turret or your wave is slow-pushing back to their tower, you can return to lane quickly. Don't just auto-pilot use it because you don't feel like walking back to lane (even though it is tempting thanks to Alistar's slow ass).
After level 2 or 3, don't be afraid to punish dumb opponents who get too close to your turret before their wave crashes. Alistar's wombo combo is to walk up in melee range then activate E, immediately Q, walk behind the enemy while they're airborn, W them toward your turret, and finally use the E's on-hit stun if you can proc it. Even if they survive, you should be able to W+Q them before they reach their turret and then E them down. Your R reduces all incoming damage by 70% including turrets for 7 seconds, so if you can finish them off with a single rotation of your skills go ahead and dive them. Practice that W+Q combo, though, as it's tricky to pull off consistently -- you want to hit Q immediately AFTER your W starts so the knock up happens at the same time you connect with your enemy.
After you have your Cinder, your wave clear becomes pretty decent when used with your Q and E. Whenever the enemy champ leaves lane, hard push the wave to their turret and take some plates. With the Demolish rune, your beefy ass can do some serious damage to turrets so don't waste any opportunity to eat some plates. Do keep in mind that your Cinder will passively damage enemy champs so it will cause their turret to focus you.
After laning phase, you want to keep putting pressure on lanes and roflstomp turrets with your Demolish Rune. Remember, you really want to focus on leveling up when there's nothing else happening, and you can always look for team fights to TP into. Speaking of team fights, once your Sunfire reaches max stacks you become an unkillable damage god. You're basically a front-line assassin that the enemy team won't be able to kill. You should be looking to W+Q the enemy ADC or Mage (anyone except their tanks and bruisers, really), and then E them into the dirt.
You should activate your R them moment you engage the enemy team because for the next 7 seconds you're almost unkillable. Once you actually see that you're taking for-realsies damage is when you should consider disengaging if your team did not come out the clear winner when your ult ends.
I think I covered everything. Now go dish out some beef on the top lane!
